Spring Break 2027

Students will choose one intensive thematic course, earning up to 2 US semester credits over their week of study. Each class has 30 contact hours consisting of five days of study with 6 hours of course instruction per day with experiential learning elements such as academic visits, guest lectures and tours to bring these courses to life.

This course explores how the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) delivers healthcare, with a focus on innovation and preparing for an uncertain future. The experiential components of the course include a roster of guest speakers from health policy think tanks or government offices, health infrastructure providers such as ambulance services, and health service non-profits. This class includes walking tours and will explore many London sites of historical importance to health and medicine, including medical museums and universities, and modern memorials to public health emergencies and innovations. Visits and guest speakers may vary by term.

This intensive theater course offers students insight through combining classroom learning with site visits and meetings with those who make it all happen. Students will speak with behind-the-scenes heroes—such as playwrights, artistic directors and set designers—as well as the professionals shaping programming, marketing and audience engagement. All students will attend two theatrical productions as part of their coursework, one community theater production and one in London’s West End, plus one of their own choosing. In addition to attending and discussing theater performances, the course experiential learning includes a tour of Shakespeare’s Globe to explore the historical contexts of his work; a visit to The Royal Court to explore new theater writing; a visit to The National Theatre to explore theater production and design and a workshop in stage fighting and movement. Visits and guest speakers may vary by term.

This course focuses on one of the world’s oldest professional police forces, London’s Metropolitan Police, from its establishment in 1829 to the present. It asks students to answer a central research question: What can the history of policing in London teach us about how to balance the need for public safety with the protection of civil liberties? Students will learn through classroom lectures, museum visits, historical walking tours, and simulation exercises as well as by observing the British criminal justice system in practice today. They will also hear directly from professionals—such as police officers, legal experts, and civil rights advocates. Classroom visits and experiential activities include a visit to the Central Criminal Court to observe a trial in process; a crime scene investigation simulation; a visit to The Bow Street Museum of Crime and Justice to learn about forensic science and criminal justice in London; and walking tours that discuss Jack the Ripper; Scotland Yard; unsolved police cases and police surveillance tactics.

AIFS Abroad in London Director, Spring Break Program

Heather Lees

Heather Lees

My love of travel began at an early age from moving around to different U.S. Naval bases and family road trips, to visiting family in the Philippines and studying abroad in the UK and Shanghai, China. After graduating from university in the U.S., I began a career in higher education, starting out in Residence Life and student activities before transitioning into international education. I have lived in the UK, on and off, for nearly 14 years (I am eligible for British citizenship!) and love to highlight all the UK has to offer. While I am mostly found indoors baking and crocheting, some of my favorite trips with students have been to national parks here in the UK… from ghyll scrambling in the Lake District to kayaking in the Brecon Beacons. I am a Mental Health First Aider and always happy to lend an ear.

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of British life and culture, the AIFS Abroad staff organize an active social and cultural program during your time in London.

Activities may include a sightseeing tour of London, a group meal and a day trip out of London.

Each academic program will include a variety of related academic visits, guest speakers and experiential elements which will bring the course to life and introduce participants to real life examples outside the classroom.

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled the General Cultural Resources and Site Specific Cultural Resources for you to review. Your program staff will also provide you with more details during pre-departure and orientation.
