All U.S. citizens who are studying for the full academic year or engaging in an internship are required to obtain a visa prior to departure. Upon acceptance, AIFS Abroad will provide instructions and the necessary official documents required to obtain the appropriate visa. As processing times can vary, we strongly recommend applying as early as possible. Non-U.S. citizens are responsible for determining whether a visa is required and to obtain one if necessary.

Fashion Modules
There are a limited number of places for study abroad students, who are majoring in Fashion at their home institution, on theory modules from the Fashion Business Management degree program. More information is available from the AIFS Abroad Program Advisor.

This program offers courses that span Business, the Arts and Sciences. Students can select from a wide variety of courses across different academic areas such as Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, Business, Media Arts & Design, Life Sciences, Architecture & Cites or Computer Science. The Westminster course offering allows great flexibility to meet academic goals. Westminster’s teaching is practical, relevant and contemporary, preparing you for the world of work.

This program allows students to complete a part-time un-paid internship and required internship class alongside two or three additional University of Westminster classes. Interns work 14 hours per week, usually spread across two or three days, and enroll in a required internship course called Professional and Personal Skills Development 5BUSS005X). The remaining semester courses are selected from the standard Business, Arts, and Sciences program course list. Students enroll in a maximum of 80 UK credits, which most often breaks down as the Internship and Professional and Personal Skills Development course, plus two or three additional University of Westminster courses.

The required Professional and Personal Skills Development (5BUSS005X) course covers management styles, organizational culture, ethical practice in the workplace, relationships at work, goal setting, and career development. The reflective nature of the course enables students to understand their skills gained and maximize the internship experience.

To be eligible for an internship, a student must have taken courses related to the relevant discipline or internship field. The University of Westminster arranges the internship placement and has various professional fields available, including, but not limited to Arts, Fashion and Design; Business/Finance; Healthcare, Charity and Non-profit organizations; Human resources; Journalism, Media and Film; and Public Relations and Marketing.

Internships are competitive, and early application is encouraged. In the application, students will indicate their top 2 desired internship areas (e.g. fashion and marketing) and a submit a short paragraph on why they are choosing these areas specifically. Students will likely be interviewed over Skype or telephone before receiving final confirmation of their internship placement. Most students receive their finalized internship placement at least two weeks before they arrive on site, but sometimes placements are finalized after arrival.

This Study+Intern option requires that students apply for a UK Student Visa before arriving in the UK. Guidance will be provided by the AIFS Abroad Program Advisor.

AIFS Abroad in London Director, Academic Year and Semester Programs

Heather Lees

Heather Lees

My love of travel began at an early age from moving around to different U.S. Naval bases and family road trips, to visiting family in the Philippines and studying abroad in the UK and Shanghai, China. After graduating from university in the U.S., I began a career in higher education, starting out in Residence Life and student activities before transitioning into international education. I have lived in the UK, on and off, for nearly 14 years (I am eligible for British citizenship!) and love to highlight all the UK has to offer. While I am mostly found indoors baking and crocheting, some of my favourite trips with students have been to national parks here in the UK… from ghyll scrambling in the Lake District to kayaking in the Brecon Beacons. I am a Mental Health First Aider and always happy to lend an ear.

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom.  To help you get a true taste of British life and culture, the AIFS Student Services Team organizes an active social and cultural program.  A guided city tour is included in the program fee – the tour will take you past Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, and more iconic London sites.  Many events are included in the program fee with a few requiring a small supplementary fee, giving students an inexpensive way to explore different parts of London.  Last year’s activities included:

  • Black London, Street Art, and Harry Potter walking tours
  • A sporting event
  • Day trips such as Stonehenge and Stourhead, Oxford, and the Cotswolds
  • River boat cruise along the Thames
  • Theater performances
  • Meals such as fish and chips, curry, or afternoon tea

You may be asked to pay a small additional fee for some of the activities above.

Besides arranged activities, there is always a wide range of events taking place in and around London, concerts, festivals, seasonal and cultural celebrations, theater beyond the West End, workshops, meet ups and much, much more. Information on these events will be made available to students upon arrival in London.

At the University of Westminster students have access to 24-hour libraries, state-of-the-art science laboratories, advanced IT services, online learning resources, art, design, film and TV studios, world-class audio recording studios, galleries, sports and recreational facilities, as well as one of the few Bloomberg Financial Markets Suites in the UK.

Their dedicated architecture, art and design spaces include specialist workshops for wood, metal, molding, casting, photography and ceramics, and a new cutting-edge digital Fabrication Laboratory that offers a suite of 3D printers and laser cutters.

The University of Westminster Student Union also offer a range of clubs and societies for students giving the chance to follow your interests, try out new hobbies and meet local students. Student can also access on-campus gym facilities for a discount. Please note that free gym membership at British universities for students and staff is uncommon.

Excursions

This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside London and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of the UK.
