Overview

Located in the heart of the stunning Tuscany region, Florence is surrounded by natural and manmade beauty at every turn. It’s home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. It’s a gorgeous city with streets to wander, towers to climb, places to shop, and lots of gelato to eat!

As our flagship international internship location, AIFS Abroad has been placing interns in Florence since 2001 with the goal of providing you with an unbelievable adventure with valuable career experience. Florence offers unparalleled opportunities in fashion, business, art, gallery and museum management, and so much more.

Over 8 summer weeks, interns complete 160 hours,of their internship placement and 80 hours of remote research or project work for their internship host. To support a deeper understanding of Italian culture and the Italian workplace, interns are simultaneously enrolled in one hybrid Italian Culture and Traditions course which is taught online with in-person field trips. This summer program provides a valuable opportunity for interns to experience Italian life and professional skill building in Florence, Italy.

Internship Opportunities

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

The AIFS Abroad Enrollment Team reviews application materials, which are a combination of relevant work experience, college or university level course work, and an assessment of maturity and readiness for working in a professional setting. After a participant has been accepted, we guarantee an internship placement. 

Our team works with applicants 1:1 to gain a better understanding of the skills they will bring to their team, talents they want to grow, and expectations they have of their experience. By working individually with each intern we can assess academic knowledge, career goals, language proficiency, and overall expectations for your time in Florence, in order to place you in a dynamic work environment.

Once a match is found, all interns will interview by phone or Zoom with their manager before the placement is offered and confirmed. When you arrive in Florence, Location Coordinators will be there to help you start your internship and support you with on-site checkins and coaching to make the most of your internship placement.

Summer interns pursuing full time placements in Italy will enroll in the following courses for a total of 9 semester credits:

  • INTN 200: Full Time International Internship in Italy (6 credits)
  • SOCI 360H: Italian Culture and Traditions (3 credits)

SOCI 360H: Italian Culture and Traditions uses a hybrid model of teaching with weekly coursework taught asynchronously online and in-person class field trips and activities.

Credits for AIFS Abroad taught courses are issued through Fairfield University, our school of record located in the US. Pursing a credit bearing internship may allow interns to access existing financial aid options and gain credit towards graduation for their majors.

Interns should check with their home university to determine how these credits may be counted towards their degree and if their financial aid can be applied to the internship program fee.

Living Abroad

AIFS Abroad provides excellent accommodations, activities, resources and staff to help interns learn about and integrate into their host community.

History 

Florence was one of the wealthiest cities in medieval Europe and became the epicenter of trade and finance. The city is also considered the birthplace of the Renaissance and has been called “the Athens of the Middle Ages.” 

Architecture 

Florence’s incredible artwork and architecture caused Forbes to label the city as one of the most beautiful on earth and the reason millions of tourists a year flock to see the historic center of Florence which is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Many activities promote a way of learning through “hands-on” experience as well as integration with the local community to allow students to get the most from life in Florence. Most events are included in the program fee and only a few require a small supplementary fee. Examples of activities are:

Optional Travel Package

Participants can select an optional transportation package for all AIFS Abroad programs that includes a round-trip flight from 25 U.S gateways and airport transfers to and from campus. Participants who choose to book their own flights will be responsible for connecting with the group at the program location and will need to make their own ground transportation arrangements from the airport.

Below are fees by departure city based on average historical costs and subject to change. If you select this option on your application, the total travel package price will be confirmed approximately one month prior to departure. Your program fee is guaranteed, and the optional travel package is an additional fee. Please note that once we have finalized the pricing for your flights the cost may change, and you will be responsible for making the additional payment if you want to participate in the travel package. Your program advisor will be in touch should there be any changes in the price of your flights.
