Overview

A semester in Sydney with AIFS brings new meaning to “once in a lifetime.” Choose from a wide range of course options at the University of Sydney, Australia’s oldest and most prestigious university. In their free time, students will explore Sydney and its surroundings, from world class museums and art galleries to the best fresh food and exciting nightlife, festivals, theater and sports events.

Academics

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

The University of Sydney is Australia’s oldest university and was founded in 1850. With over 70,000 students, the university prides itself on producing leaders with qualities that will enable them to serve communities. It is 4th in the world for graduate employability and is the top university in Australia. It is recognized as a top university for International Relations, Asia-Pacific related studies, Engineering, STEM, Environmental Topics and Liberal Arts. The business school has the prestigious triple accreditation from AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS putting it in the top 1% of business schools worldwide. Since it offers the widest range of academic programs of any Australian university, students can experience a flexible and personalized study abroad experience. Located in a beautiful area of central Sydney, the campus is close to the city center, walking distance to vibrant communities and offers world class sports facilities. 

Full Curriculum means that students can choose any course available on the University of Sydney’s curriculum subject to prerequisites.

Courses are typically worth 6 USYD credit points each, equivalent to 4 U.S. semester credits. Fall semester students take 18 or 24 USYD credits equivalent to 12 or 16 U.S. semester credits. 

Students can also select an internship (120 hours) over 13 weeks in and industry or research placement. This internship course is worth 6 credits and it taken alongside the other units of study.

Sustainability Program – students can join the concurrent certificate program and get a sustainability micro credential.

SYDNEY SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM

This co-curricular program can be taken alongside the study abroad program at the University of Sydney where students can undertake exclusive activities and a speaker series focused around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Completion results in a Digital Badge.

Full Curriculum means that students can choose any course available on the University of Sydney’s curriculum subject to prerequisites. 

The program aligns with the northern hemisphere spring semester making it ‘Spring Friendly’ and begins in January with a 1 subject-intensive course chosen from the Summer Session or an internship (120 hours) for 4-6 weeks. Students then take 2 or 3 courses from the regular Semester 1 Session. 

Courses are typically worth 6 USYD credit points each, equivalent to 4 U.S. semester credits. Spring Friendly students take 18 or 24 USYD credits equivalent to 12 or 16 U.S. semester credits. 

Sustainability Program – students can join the concurrent certificate program and get a sustainability micro-credential.

Geography

With its excellent beaches and year-round mild weather, Sydney is the perfect place to try surfing, sailing, stand up paddle boarding, and other aquatic activities.

Sydney is the most populous city in Australia with over 4.6 million inhabitants with approximately 28% of the population was born elsewhere. Sydney is a consistently high-ranking world city for quality of life.

Environmental Focus

The City of Sydney introduced a Sustainable Sydney 2030 program, with various targets planned and a guide on how to reduce energy in homes and offices by 30%. The city also has an “urban forest growth strategy” which aims to increase the tree coverage in the city by planting trees and vegetation to provide cleaner air and create moisture during hot weather, thus lowering city temperatures.

The University of Sydney organizes a variety of social events to help you make the most of campus life and support you on your health, wellbeing and academic journey. Some activities may require an additional fee.

There is a an extensive sporting / sporting facility culture on campus that include options that are competitive or social. Most student residences also offer onsite gym facilities.  

Excursions

This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside Sydney and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of Australia.

Optional Flight Package

Students can select an optional transportation package for all AIFS programs. Students who choose to book their own flights should meet up with group at the program location and will need to make their own ground transportation arrangements.
