Sarah Plumley

Born and raised on the north-Norfolk coast in the east of England, I studied French and Spanish at university, and was fortunate to spend my third year studying abroad in Barcelona and Paris, which was an incredible experience. I have now worked for AIFS for ten years, working on our study abroad programs in Spain, France, South America and in the UK. I am fascinated by the U.S., and have visited 26 states to date. In my spare time I like going to live comedy and concerts, finding new brunch spots in the city, baking, and planning my next travel adventure! I can’t wait to share the best of the capital with you while you are studying at SGUL!

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of British life and culture the AIFS staff organizes an active social and cultural program. A guided city tour is included in the program fee – see Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London.

Other events are offered which are subsidized from student fees so students pay a much lower rate than they would if they bought tickets directly from local theaters and tour agencies.

Last year’s activities in London included:

  • Black London, Rock Music, Street Art and Royal London walking tours
  • Rugby and cricket matches
  • Day trips to Stonehenge and Salisbury, Oxford, Bath, Stratford-upon-Avon and Brighton
  • River boat cruise along the Thames
  • Performance at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
  • Theater performances of WickedPhantom of the OperaLes Misérables, and The Woman in Black
  • Ballet performance of Cinderella
  • Traditional afternoon tea

Please note that students pay a small additional fee for some of the activities above.

Besides arranged activities, there are a wide range of events taking place in and around London during the summer, such as the Wimbledon tennis tournament, Henley Royal Regatta, rock concerts, theater in the parks and much, much more. Information on these events will be made available to students upon arrival in London.

If you are studying on a customized, faculty-led program through your home institution, please visit AIFS Customized Faculty-Led for details.

You will study in Bloomsbury, the academic district of central London. You will have access to the UCL campus for classrooms, 17 subject libraries, computer labs and cafés. With the British Museum, British Library and many other London institutions on the doorstep, Bloomsbury provides plenty of inspiration as well as being walking distance from Regent’s Park and the vibrant Covent Garden and Soho for shopping and entertainment.

Social identity & access

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled many resources about social identity and access in specific locations abroad. Your program staff will also provide you with more details pre-departure and during orientation.
