Customized Faculty-Led Study Abroad
2021 updates and FAQs

The AIFS customized faculty-led team continues to work with many U.S. partner institutions to plan their programs for Summer 2021 and beyond.  At this stage our hope is that conditions in the U.S. and in our sites around the world will mean that these experiences will go ahead and we are working with our experienced staff and partners to prepare for that.

We are liaising with staff and providers in all our overseas locations on a continual basis and monitoring the latest information for each program site, including the current entry conditions and health and safety measures in place. This information will be shared with the U.S. partner institution regularly so that as the program application deadline approaches, we can jointly make an informed decision regarding the viability of the program and any modifications that may need to be made in light of local conditions and regulations.

If either AIFS or the home institution feels it is necessary to cancel the program before the application/deposit deadline, students will receive a full refund. All deadline dates will be clearly specified in the AIFS Program Proposal/Contract and partners should review these and liaise with their Program Manager to be clear on the refund policy for their program.

The “Health and Safety Abroad” information also applies to all of our Customized Faculty-Led programs. We will be offering the same high level of support including detailed pre-departure orientations with up-to-date COVID-19 information, extensive on-site orientations and ongoing on-site support from our experienced local staff. As always, we will work with our U.S. partner schools to offer a rigorous academic program while observing any local guidelines that might be in place, for example ensuring adequate classroom space to allow for social distancing and rigorous cleaning of all facilities.

All participants on our programs are covered by a very robust CISI medical insurance as part of their program inclusions. There is no extra cost for this coverage. CISI has published a list of questions that may be useful to you: Frequently asked questions related to COVID-19.

When abroad, participants have access to AXA’s Remote Crisis Support & Behavioural Health Assistance which offers access to psychological care administered by U.S. specialists including remote assessment, follow up care and continued support during a student’s time abroad.

Participants have access to Travel Eye, which is a mobile platform allowing for push alerts to be sent to mobile devices regarding global events, country risk information, enhanced medical provider searches, and one-click access to AXA operations center if medical or travel assistance is needed.

Participants also have the option of purchasing additional trip cancellation or interruption insurance which allows them to protect their study abroad program. This is at an additional cost and is NOT a program inclusion. This policy includes options to cancel for any reason (CFAR) and interrupt for any reason (IFAR). Details of the Worldwide Trip Protector Plans with travel insurance underwritten by the United States Fire Insurance Company, rated A (Excellent) by A.M. Best 2019, are available on the Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) website - https://www.culturalinsurance.com/academic-trip-protector-insurance-program.asp. Students may purchase their plan directly through the CISI website.
