Understanding our Funding Types

The scholarships listed here are available to AIFS Abroad study abroad and/or internship participants and are to be allocated for AIFS Abroad opportunities unless otherwise noted. Spring break programs and virtual internships are not eligible. If you are studying on a customized, faculty-led program through your home institution, these scholarships are not applicable to your program, though you may wish to check with your school regarding any available funding.

AIFS Abroad Competitive Scholarships

Competitive scholarships require an application and may include an essay about a particular topic. A specific number of awards are made each term, and the selection process is competitive. Award amounts vary. Spring Break and virtual programs are not eligible.

AIFS Abroad Limited Grants

Limited Grants are $1,000 awards. These grants have a fixed funding amount each year, and a select number of participants are awarded each term. Grants are stackable: Participants may receive multiple grants they are eligible for, up to a maximum of $2,500 for a semester or quarter study abroad program or $1,500 for a summer, January Term, or internship program. Spring Break and virtual programs are not eligible. Limited grants are awarded to participants from our partner universities.

AIFS Abroad Paired Grants

Paired grants are for eligible participants enrolled at our partner institutions as part of the application process; applicants do not need to complete a separate scholarship application for this funding type. As an applicant, you will know before you apply which grants you are eligible to receive. Grants are stackable: participants may receive multiple grants they are eligible for, up to a maximum of $2,500 for a semester or quarter study abroad program or $1,500 for a summer, January Term, or internship program. Spring Break and virtual programs are not eligible. Paired grants are awarded to participants from our partner universities.

Financial Support

AIFS Abroad recognizes the challenges that today’s students face with meeting the cost of their education. We believe that a study abroad and/or intern abroad experience is an essential component of well-rounded education and are committed to providing financial assistance to as many students as possible in support of their goal to study abroad. AIFS funding, combined with other sources of financial support students can access, will help make international education goals attainable. 

Over 50% of our students receive financial support.

Cultural Resources

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled the General Cultural Resources and Site Specific Cultural Resources for you to review. Your program staff will also provide you with more details during pre-departure and orientation.
