AIFS Study Abroad Scholarships, Grants & Financial Support

Each year, more than $800,000 in scholarships, grants and financial support is awarded to deserving students & institutions. Funds are available for both summer and semester programs. The scholarships listed are not available to students on AIFS customized faculty-led programs. If you are participating in a program through your school, check with the study abroad director for details of any special AIFS scholarships that may be available.

To apply for one of the AIFS Study Abroad scholarships below, complete the appropriate application form and send it to your Admissions Officer along with all required supplemental materials as listed on the form. Completed scholarship applications can be emailed, faxed, or mailed to your Admissions Officer, but must be received (or postmarked if mailed) by the stated deadline.

Generation Study Abroad Scholarships

AIFS Generation Study Abroad Scholarships

Semester: $1,000/scholarship, up to 40 awards
Summer: $500/scholarship

J-Term: $500/scholarship, up to 10 awards

Eligibility: Students must meet the minimum requirements for the program to which they are applying and have at least a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA.

Deadline: Completed scholarship and program applications must be postmarked by the following deadlines:
Academic Year/Fall Quarter/Fall Semester: April 15
Spring Quarter/Spring Semester/January Term: October 1
Summer: March 1

AIFS Generation Study Abroad Rome Scholarships

Additional funds available for students interested in Rome

Semester: $1,000/scholarship, up to 25 awards
Summer: $500/scholarship
, up to 25 awards
J-Term: $500/scholarship, up to 25 awards

Eligibility: Students must enroll in an AIFS Study Abroad program in Rome and submit the AIFS Study in Rome Scholarship Application by appropriate deadline. Students must meet the minimum requirements for the program to which they are applying and have at least a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA.

Deadline: Completed scholarship and program applications must be postmarked by March 1 for Summer 2017, April 15 for Fall 2017 or October 1 for Spring 2018.

Diversity Scholarships

Diversity Abroad Achievement Scholarship – offered by AIFS

Each semester, AIFS offers 2 $5,000 scholarships to outstanding students from under-represented groups. Applicants must demonstrate high academic achievement and/or participate in community service activities.

AIFS-HACU Scholarships

The purpose of the program is to provide scholarships for outstanding Hispanic students to study abroad with AIFS. This special scholarship will be available to students attending HACU member schools. To find out more about HACU, visit www.hacu.net .

Scholarship winners can study for a semester (Fall or Spring) or summer on any AIFS program.

Awards/Eligibility: Students will receive scholarships of 50% of the AIFS all-inclusive program fee. Students must meet all standard AIFS eligibility requirements.

Awards will be made by AIFS in conjunction with its Advisory Board.

Deadline: Completed scholarship and program applications must be postmarked by the following deadlines:
Academic Year/Fall Quarter/Fall Semester: April 15
Spring Quarter/Spring Semester: October 1
Summer: March 1

AIFS-NAFEO Scholarships

AIFS and the National Association For Equal Opportunity in Higher Education are working together to provide scholarships for outstanding students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to study abroad with AIFS. These special scholarships will be available to students attending NAFEO member institutions. To find out more about NAFEO visit http://www.nafeonation.org/.

Scholarship winners can study for a semester (Fall or Spring) on any AIFS program.

Awards/Eligibility: Awarded students will receive 50% of the AIFS all-inclusive program fee. Students must meet all standard AIFS eligibility requirements. Students are advised to work with their home institution's study abroad coordinator and their academic advisor to facilitate the transfer of academic credit.

Awards will be made by AIFS in conjunction with NAFEO.

Deadline: Completed scholarship and program applications must be postmarked by April 15 for Academic Year/Fall Quarter/Fall Semester or October 1 for Spring Quarter/Spring Semester.

Need-Based Scholarships

Gilman Scholarship Match – $500/$250 Grants

AIFS will award an additional $500 to each student who receives a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and uses it toward an AIFS semester or academic year catalog program, or $250 toward a summer catalog program. More information about Benjamin A. John S. Linakis Scholarship
$5,000 for an AIFS Spring semester program

The AIFS Foundation is proud to offer the John S. Linakis Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded annually to an AIFS student with limited financial resources who also demonstrates an interest in and a commitment to social justice.

John had a great appreciation for travel because he felt it broadened awareness of cultural and economic differences. He cared deeply for people of all walks of life, and dreamed of a world where those differences didn't limit opportunity. Mr. Linakis began his 30-year career at AIFS working in the study abroad division. He later became the head of the AIFS flights department as well as the Senior Vice President of AIFS.

Russel and Deborah Taylor Foundation Scholarship

The Russel and Deborah Taylor Foundation is committed to providing study abroad scholarships for students who have demonstrated academic excellence and who have significant financial need. Scholarships covering up to half the program fee are available each semester. To apply students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5. Students should apply by the published deadlines prior to their semester of choice, providing an essay stating their academic objectives together with supporting documentation of financial need. (Pell Grant eligible students will be given priority).

Additional AIFS Scholarships & Grants

Affiliate Grants

Over 250 colleges and universities are affiliated with AIFS, which helps make the process of applying for an AIFS program easy, and may provide access to special affiliate scholarships. Students from affiliate institutions may automatically receive $400 grants for semester programs and $200 grants for summer programs. Others may apply for scholarships administered by their study abroad office.

Diversity Abroad Overseas Ambassador Grant

The Overseas Ambassador grant is a program created for currently students or recent graduates who are planning to study, intern, volunteer or teach abroad. The Overseas Ambassadors will serve as an overseas correspondent, sharing their experiences to motivate other members of the DiversityAbroad.com community to go abroad. By writing insightful articles, sharing inspiring videos and pictures about your new surroundings, cross-cultural observations and personal growth, your words will inspire other diverse students to go abroad and challenge them to rethink how study abroad experiences can be for everyone. Sponsored by Diversity Abroad & AIFS, the Overseas Ambassador grants $500 is open to students participating any accredited study abroad program during the fall and spring terms. Learn more here.

Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship Match

AIFS will award an additional $500 to each student who receives a Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship and uses it toward an AIFS semester or academic year catalog program. More information about Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship is available at here.

Fulbright Summer Institute Scholarship

Each year the U.S.-U.K. Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes which give U.S. undergraduates the opportunity to attend an academic program at a highly regarded U.K. University. The AIFS Globe Education Theater program was honored to be selected as a Fulbright Summer Institute.

Scholarship winners will study for a summer session at the London Globe Education Theater program.

Generation Study Abroad Scholarships at Limerick

Eligibility: Students must be a STEM major and meet the GPA requirement of a 3.0. See PDF below for detailed instructions.

Completed scholarship must be postmarked by the following deadlines:

Spring Semester: December 1st

Study Again with AIFS Grants

If you studied abroad on an AIFS summer program, you will receive a $1000 grant to study abroad on an AIFS semester or academic year catalog program, or a $500 grant toward a summer catalog program.

If you studied abroad on an AIFS semester or academic year program, you will receive a $500 grant toward a summer catalog program or a $1000 grant toward a semester program in a different academic year.

Deadline: Completed scholarship and program applications must be postmarked by the following deadlines:
Academic Year/Fall Quarter/Fall Semester: April 15
Spring Quarter/Spring Semester: October 1
Summer: March 1

January Term: November 1
