Prague river in winter.

Overview

Study abroad in Prague during January Term with AIFS Abroad and take part in a two-week academic program at Charles University, the most prestigious university in the Czech Republic and the oldest in Central Europe. Known for its enduring historical character, striking architecture, and influential artistic and literary traditions—including its legacy as the birthplace of Franz Kafka—Prague is an inspiring destination for a January Term study abroad program.

Students will enroll in one intensive course, Czech Language or Alternative Culture, earning three credits while studying alongside other international students. The Czech Language course supports authentic engagement with locals, and Alternative Culture explores Czech counterculture through street art, underground movements, punk, hip-hop, and political art collectives. Surrounded by preserved medieval streets, Gothic spires, and Art Nouveau cafés, students can spend their winter break connecting academic study with hands-on cultural exploration.

This January Term program in Prague includes organized cultural and social activities, excursions to historic sites, and on-site AIFS Abroad support, offering a study abroad experience that encourages academic growth and immersive learning beyond the classroom.

Renata Sluneckova

Hello everybody, I am sending you my best wishes from Prague, my home for more than 20 years. I received my Master’s degree from Palackého University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, and before joining AIFS Abroad in 2014, I worked for the Open Media Institute in Prague, the partner organization of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, making local arrangements for BBC film crews and for journalists based in Prague.

My experience of living in different parts of the Czech Republic means I am a great resource for you when you are in Prague. You will find me in the AIFS Abroad office, right in the center of the city, a short walk from the university classroom buildings and the main attractions of this most beautiful city.

In addition to the academic program, AIFS Abroad students will enjoy the following activities organized to encourage deeper understanding of Prague and the Czech Republic:

  • an introductory walking tour of Prague
  • a welcome meal
  • an opera, ballet or concert performance
  • a visit to a famous Czech café
  • a sporting event or theater performance

Transportation

Public transportation is very convenient in Prague. You will receive a transportation pass to ride the metro, buses and trams.
