Herstory: Leading Women in the U.K. and Ireland
This course is designed to introduce students to some of the most iconic female leaders from the U.K. and Ireland in their respective areas throughout history. It will explore women’s contributions to the fields of medicine, politics, art, literature, science, sport and law among others. Historic and present-day figures such as Jane Austen, Mary Seacole, Emmeline Pankhurst, Anne Enright, Constance Markievicz, Margaret Busby, Ada Lovelace, Queen Elizabeth II, Diane Abbott, Nicola Sturgeon and many others will be studied, focusing on the socioeconomic and cultural context of the societies they lived/live in, the importance of their work and their legacies. In addition to learning about famous women and their achievements through relevant readings and lectures, students on this course will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in their learning through interactive tours and museum visits, as well as guest lectures and Q&A sessions with modern female leaders, inspired by their predecessors.
