Course Description

ENV/SOC 220 (3 credits)
Sustainable Cities

This course will focus on the importance of sustainability across three different European cities: London (U.K.), Stockholm (Sweden) and Copenhagen (Denmark) to explore how each nation is responding to the global challenge. Students will be asked to apply a critical approach to issues including creating a green economy, investing in sustainable transportation systems, renewable power sources, flood defenses and dealing with waste. The course will include visits to urban regeneration projects to explore and assess their social, ecological, and economic contribution to their societies. Students will be required to critically analyze and compare urban initiatives such as the 2012 Olympics in London with the world’s first national urban park, and Ekoparken in Stockholm. The course will explore sustainability as a phenomenon beyond global green politics and ask students to apply a holistic approach towards a sustainable model which encompasses social, ecological and economic factors and in which we can all play an individual role.

Students will gain an understanding of the role sustainability plays in three different cities in Europe and have an introduction to different sustainability initiatives in London, Stockholm and Copenhagen and to their successes and failures through field trips directly linked to sustainable development. They will learn to critically analyze and evaluate sustainability in a holistic manner beyond the “3Rs” and produce original and individual responses to the current issues.

The course will be taught through a combination of lectures and seminars, with emphasis on student attendance and participation and students required to lead classroom discussion based on assigned readings and to present in groups on prepared topics. Discussion and debate are viewed as an essential part of the interactive and participatory learning program. Students will participate in assignments and activities that require them to consider and reflect upon their own and/or others’ attitudes about sustainability issues.

By the end of the course students will be able to recognize and explain the specific relationship between sustainability and the three different European societies visited within the program. Students will also be able to demonstrate the ability to discuss, critically analyze and evaluate sustainability policies and initiatives in London, Stockholm and Copenhagen and arguments from advocates and critics towards these initiatives.
