Academic Programs

Exemplifying both the U.S. and British educational traditions, students can expect small class sizes, honors seminar teaching styles, high-touch student support and social services and close integration with the local community in London and beyond. Academic pathways provide the right combination of intentional design for students at all levels and the opportunity to explore new and innovative courses that are cutting edge and experiential in design. All students will be engaged with experiential and community activities that will ensure they stay out of the study abroad bubble and facilitate addressing the critical questions about cultural differences, global issues and their own identity, contributing to the increased self-awareness that is at the at the heart of a truly successful study abroad experience.

The London and Rome dual semester program is designed for students interested in the arts, social justice and psychology who wish to apply what they learn in class to real-life situations and to take an inter-disciplinary approach to current World issues. Students will take classes in both London and Rome and spend 5 days in Berlin engaging in in-depth discussion around a central topic with their AIFS colleagues and local students.

Program Options

Students will take 2 courses in London and 2 courses in Rome for a maximum of 12 credits. Choose from 3 academic tracks - The Arts, Global Issues/Social Identity and Psychology or take courses from all three for an interdisciplinary approach. You can also take Italian language in Rome instead of the regular content courses.

All courses meet for 45 contact hours per semester and carry 3 credits. Students take 4 courses for 12 credits. After spending 6 weeks in London students will travel to Berlin. During the 5 days in Berlin students will explore memorial culture in Germany, taking an interdisciplinary approach and building on what they learned during their time in London on the arts, psychology or global issues/social identify academic tracks. Berlin has many visual/artistic reminders of the Holocaust and monuments to persecuted/minoritized groups. Students will visit the Holocaust Memorial, the Stolpersteine (stumbling stones that mark the place of residence of people persecuted during the Holocaust) and the memorial to the persecuted Sinti and Roma which incorporates music, text and a water feature. Visits will also be made to the Holzmarkt (literally wood market) and Yaam youth and reggae club to see first-hand examples of urban innovation and the democratization of public spaces. Students will have opportunities to meet activists/artists and take part in some of the activities offered in these places.

On the final day in Berlin students will organize a 1-day conference where they will engage, alongside their peers and local students, in in-depth discussion around topics such as the arts as a tool for social change and expression of identity, and art as therapy. The program then continues in Rome where students will take another two 3-credit courses.

No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a grade. Pass/Fail options are not available.
