Study Abroad in Barcelona - Universitat de Vic: Academics

Academic Programs

Courses include: business, communications, design, history, innovation, internship, marketing, psychology, Spanish language

Program Option

The Business, Design and Innovation Program is designed for students wishing to gain an insight into innovative business projects in the European capital of design. The program is hosted at the BAU design school at the Poble Nou campus in Barcelona. The courses are strongly oriented towards practice, but they also cover the basic theory needed to work on real case studies. Professionals from the world of business and design will be invited to some of the course sessions.

Two levels of Spanish language are also offered (although not mandatory) depending on a minimum student enrollment. Students taking Spanish take a placement test after arrival in Barcelona.

All courses meet for 45 contact hours and are recommended for 3 credits. All courses are taught in English apart from Spanish language. You can take up to 5 courses for a total of 15 credits.

Please note that the Universitat de Vic issues ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits. The number of class hours and ECTS credits will be shown on the transcript to allow each studentís home institution the ultimate decision in the awarding of U.S. credit. Recommended U.S. semester credits shown in parentheses next to each course on the course description pages are based on 15 classroom hours per semester credit and are not a conversion of ECTS credits. Students should consult with their university advisors prior to participating in the program to have course credit pre-approved and ensure that they are taking the appropriate amount of credits.

No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a grade. Pass/Fail options are not available.

Session/Term Credits Requirements
Fall or Spring Semester Up to 15 2.75 GPA; Spanish language not required

Internships are offered by Global Experiences (GE) a member of the AIFS family.

Students will engage in work experience with organizations in business, industry, government, not-for-profit, or education. The experience is designed to be relevant to the student’s academic pursuits, personal development, and professional preparation.

The internship provides students with the opportunity to gain experience in workplace settings and to translate classroom learning into practice. The internship is a substantive career development experience with the intent being for the student to be exposed to business ideas and concepts while being mentored. Doing analysis, contributing to decisions, and communicating meaningful ideas should form the bulk of the work, although some low skill work (for example, data entry and making phone calls) can be a part of the assignment. At the end of the internship experience, students will be able to reflect on their personal and professional growth and begin seeing themselves on their career path.

Placements are available in the following fields: accounting, business, communications, finance, graphic design, IT, marketing and NGO (a non-profit organization). Spanish is not required except for NGO internship students who will need an Advanced level of Spanish. Knowledge of Spanish may in some cases give you access to a broader range of internships.

The internship is accredited by Fairfield University and offered for 3 credits and runs for approximately 12 weeks for approximately 15 hours per week. This is the minimum amount of time most employers require for an internship.

There is a detailed application process and students will be required to submit a résumé and cover letter with their application and to undergo interviews with prospective internship placements.

In addition to the internship course and placement students take two courses from the regular offering of courses on the Business, Design and Innovation Program at UVic for 3 credits each and then choose one or two courses (3 credits each) from a selection offered by AIFS for a minimum of 12 semester credits. Students who are considering taking 15 credits (5 courses) should bear in mind that this is a heavy course load due to the commitment required for the internship.

Please note that the Universitat de Vic issues ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits. The number of class hours and ECTS credits will be shown on the transcript to allow each student’s home institution the ultimate decision in the awarding of U.S. credit.
