Spend a summer exploring and comparing three modern, multi-cultural, and green European cities: London, Stockholm, and Copenhagen! Experience the culture and innovation of these global leaders in sustainability.

Academics

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

Academic credit for the Sustainability Cities program is awarded by Fairfield University. Fairfield University is a private Jesuit university founded in 1942 in Fairfield, Connecticut, well known for their commitment to international education. Fairfield is a fully accredited university and member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. 

In 2020 Fairfield and AIFS partnered to develop a school of record relationship that will allow academic credit to be available for both Fairfield and non-Fairfield students. 

Course syllabi and faculty credentials are reviewed and approved by Fairfield University.

This program is a combination of lectures and seminars, with an emphasis on student attendance and participation. Students will be required to lead classroom discussion based on assigned readings and will present in groups on prepared topics. Students will critically analyze and evaluate sustainability policies and initiatives in London, Stockholm and Copenhagen and arguments from advocates and critics towards these initiatives.

Living Abroad

Day 1Optional overnight flight from the U.S. to London.* 
Day 2Arrive London. Transfer to accommodation. Free time to settle in and evening group welcome meal. 

London, the capital city of England and largest city in the U.K., is one of the greenest cities in the world with over 3,000 parks and green spaces. It ranks particularly high in quality of life and public transport infrastructure.
Day 3Morning orientation with AIFS staff followed by introductory class. Afternoon sightseeing tour of London, ending at The Wellcome Trust to visit the Being Human exhibition. 
Day 4Morning class: The growth of sustainability in the U.K. Afternoon excursion to The Crystal, a sustainable cities initiative by Siemens. 
Day 5Morning class: Environmental politics in the U.K. Afternoon visit to BedZed, the U.K.’s first large scale eco-village. 
Day 6Morning class: Urban initiatives in the U.K. Afternoon on-site lecture and tour of the Greenwich Ecology Peninsula Park. 
Day 7Morning class: The economics of sustainability in the U.K. Afternoon on-site lecture and visit to Stratford Olympic Park, legacy of the 2012 London Olympics. 
Day 8Study day. 
Day 9Morning flight to Stockholm and check into accommodation. Afternoon guided walking tour of Stockholm’s Old Town. 

Stockholm, Sweden’s beautiful and elegant capital city, holds the title as the first city to be named “European Green Capital” in 2010 by the EU Commission. Made up of more than 14 islands and 50 bridges, it is also famous for its old town, Gamla Stan, and home to the Nobel Museum.
Day 10Morning visit to The Stockholm Room and its various exhibitions on urban development. Afternoon on-site lecture and tour on topic of sustainability in the city of the European Green Capital Award, including Ekoparken, the world’s first national park. 
Day 11Morning on-site lecture and tour of Hammarby Port, an area of major urban development. Afternoon academic visit to an EU funded initiative targeted at transforming aging European cities to smart and sustainable entities. 
Day 12Morning visit to Stockholm’s meatpacking district, a project transforming an industrial area to a livable urban district. Afternoon class. 
Day 13Study day. 
Day 14Morning departure to Copenhagen by train. Transfer to accommodation, followed by a “Cool Copenhagen Sustainability” walking tour. 

Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, was originally a Viking fishing village in the 10th century. As well as epitomizing ‘Scandi cool’ the city is famous for its historic center, Tivoli Gardens, Nyhavn Canal and Royal Quarter, and Hans Christian Andersen. Situated on the coastal island of Zealand and Amager, it is linked to Malmö, Sweden by bridge. It is also one of the most sustainable and energy efficient cities in the world.
Day 15Morning academic visit to Tivoli Gardens with lecture on topic of Green Urban Development. Afternoon class. 
Day 16Day trip to Malmö, Sweden with on-site lecture and walking tour on topic of Green Architecture, Energy Efficiency and Recycling. Afternoon lecture on food sustainability at a zero-waste food initiative restaurant followed by a group lunch. 
Day 17Study day. 
Day 18Morning study time. Afternoon class and group discussion. 
Day 19Morning exam. Free afternoon. Evening group farewell meal. 
Day 20Optional return flight from Copenhagen to the U.S.*
