Spend a summer in the elegant and scenic city of Kyoto, Japan, with AIFS! Choose from a variety of course options with credit awarded by Fairfield University. Kyoto is famous for its preservation of Japanese traditional arts including the time-honored geisha dance, Buddhist temples, gardens, shrines, and traditional wooden houses.

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

Academic credit for the program is awarded by Fairfield University. Fairfield University is a private Jesuit university founded in 1942 in Fairfield, Connecticut, well known for their commitment to international education. Fairfield is a fully accredited university and member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.  

In 2020 Fairfield and AIFS partnered to develop a school of record relationship that will allow academic credit to be available for both Fairfield and non-Fairfield students.  

Fairfield University aims to help students become more globally competent through research, service, and language learning opportunities.

A three-week study abroad tour, this program will give students a direct insight into the history of religion in Japan through visits to major shrines, temples, museums and gardens in Kyoto, Nara, Ise and Koyasan. Although religion is the focus, we will base our study on artistic development and aesthetics over the centuries.

Living Abroad


In Kyoto you will live in centrally-located apart-hotels

Kyoto is famous for its preservation of Japanese traditional arts including the time-honored geisha dance, Buddhist temples, gardens, shrines, and traditional wooden houses. It is also a modern city with an international population and home to over twenty universities. 


Kyoto is home to the belief systems of Shinto and Buddhism, Japan’s two main religions. 


Kyoto is home to many Shinto myths and legends, like the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine that is dedicated to Inari, God of Rice.

AIFS On-Site Staff

AIFS provides dedicated on-site staff who will assist students throughout their stay in Japan. Details and contact information will be announced when available.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of Japanese culture, a wide range of cultural activities and excursions are included in your program fee. Activities and events will include:

  • Guided sightseeing tour of Gion, Kyoto’s most famous geisha district
  • Visit to Kyoto National Museum
  • Guided visit to Fushimi Inari, a famous Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari, God of Rice
  • Traditional tea ceremony
  • Visit to Hōryū-ji, one of the oldest Temples in Japan
  • Japanese cooking class
  • Welcome and farewell meals


This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside Kyoto and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of Japan. Previous excursions have included:

Visit to Futami Okitama Shrine and Ise Grand Shrine. Includes round-trip transportation, hotel accommodations and breakfast.

A temple in Koyasan, Japan.


Visits to different sites and museums including Koyasan Reihokan Museum and Koyasan Danjo Garan (Sacred Temple Complex) and an evening tour of Okunoin Cemetery. Students stay overnight in Temple accommodation with a traditional monk meal. Includes round-trip transportation.

Social identity & access

Optional Flight Package

Students can select an optional transportation package for all AIFS programs. Students who choose to book their own flights should meet up with group at the program location and will need to make their own ground transportation arrangements.
