Financial Reporting
This course offers a theoretical and practical approach to the framework of regulations that influences financial reporting practice. Accounting techniques and methods that are adopted in practice will be covered and particular attention will be given to the conceptual framework for financial reporting and the preparation of financial statements that comply with International Accounting Standards (IAS), and provide a true and fair view.

Organizational Behavior
This course explores the structure and nature of organizations and the contribution that communication and human behavior makes to organizational performance. The course will address not only macro level issues relating to the environment and context within which organizations operate, but also the micro level influences of people as individuals and groups, their motivations and operating styles. The management of people for successful organizational performance will be emphasized by considering work environmental factors that facilitate or impede organizational success.

Digital Marketing & Social Media
The course will provide insights into new marketing concepts, tools, technologies and business models to enhance the consumer value creation process. New technologies have created some radical changes in the way companies reach their markets and in particular the emerging phenomenon of social media.

This course integrates ideas from the process of gaining traffic or attention the rapidly emerging and influential social networks including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+. It will provide an understanding of techniques and tools to understand and harness the opportunities provided by best practice social media marketing. Students will have the opportunity to learn about electronic commerce in action; the interplay between the technology and marketing applications; the changing scope and uses of the Internet, along with current management issues facing businesses attempting to use the World Wide Web.

Fashion and Media
This course traces the multiple connections between the fashion and media industries. It emphasizes the material realities, pragmatic and creative dynamisms, fantasy components, and essential visuality of fashion. It also highlights how cities in general function as creative agencies for fermenting style and fashion ideas and attitudes.

Mass Communication and Society
In this course, "mass communications" is taken in its broadest sense, which may include cinema, television, newspapers, magazines, comics, and the Internet, as well as fashion and merchandising. "Society" involves the people who engage with those texts, from critical theorists to fans, censors to consumers. The course examines the relationship between texts and the people at various points during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, from various cultural and national perspectives. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to test and debate established theories by bringing them to bear on everyday popular texts.

Clinical Psychology
In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that antidepressant use in the United States has increased nearly 400% in the last two decades, making antidepressants the most frequently-used class of medications by Americans aged 18-44 years. In a similar manner, a study conducted between 2001-2003 by the National Institute of Mental Health reported that, at some point in their lives, 46% of Americans met the criteria established by the American Psychiatric Association for at least one mental illness. This course will explore how modern Clinical Psychology implements evidence-based treatments to improve psychologically-based distress or dysfunction and promote subjective and behavioral well-being and personal development.

Probability and Statistics II
This Course is a continuation of MTH125 and is concerned with inferential statistics. It covers sampling distributions, interval estimations and estimating confidence intervals for populations and proportions, hypothesis and significance testing, goodness-of-fit test and Chi-square test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), applications of non-parametric statistics and linear regression analysis. All practical work will be done on SPSS statistical software.

Corporate Finance
This course examines the financial needs of corporations and the range of mechanisms available to meet them. A review of basic financial statement analysis leads into consideration of working capital management. The key concept of the time value of money is applied to bond and equity valuation as well as capital budgeting. The basic Capital Asset Pricing Model is examined, as a key component of WACC calculation. Varying corporate financial requirements are considered including comparison of internal and external sources of funds, their relative availability, and costs. Final topics include capital structure and dividend policy, and ideas of Modigliani and Miller.

International Financial History
The course provides students with an in-depth knowledge of the evolution of the international financial system since the 19th century. It covers the development of international monetary systems, the rise and fall of international financial centers and the relationship between finance, industry and economics. The course pays particular attention to financial crises, a phenomenon that represents an endemic feature of capitalist history. The course makes use of students’ analytical and data interpretation skills and allows an evidence based reflection with a direct relevance to the latest financial crisis and the current financial and economic developments.

European Business Environment
Focuses on the economic, political, social environment for business in Europe within this field, it examines the institutional interplay with the European Union, the dynamics between the different Member States and the different policies with direct relevance to businesses operating in the European Union.

Consumer Behavior
The course will focus on the study of consumers and their behavioral patterns in the consumption and purchase of product/services as well as the impact of information technology (social media, digital media) on consumer behavior. It examines behavioral and cognitive psychology and their application in order to measure and interpreting consumers’ formation of attitudes and beliefs. The course provides a psychoanalytic perspective in order to inform the development of marketing strategy as well as to what motivates individual to purchase a specific branded products. It provides an in depth understanding of the consumption culture in modern and postmodern life and how marketers develop lifestyle branding strategies to attract different group of consumers market segments.

Pictures of Power
The course aims to introduce students, by way of specific case-studies ranging from the ancient world to the modern day, to innovative methods of studying the past that utilize popular forms of visual culture and propaganda. While recognizing the complexity of the propaganda process and the various influences that form and shape images, the course will focus on the historical relationship between propaganda (in architecture, cartoons, film, painting, pamphlets, photography, posters, sculpture, and television) and politics. The focus on the theme of propaganda and its relationship with various forms of media through the ages allows for the opportunity to compare and contrast particular case studies over time and geographical space and therefore to distinguish elements of continuity and change, which will help students to ‘read’ historic images critically, both as vehicles for understanding the past and in order to identify the relationship between propaganda and power.

Advanced Differential Calculus
This course provides an introduction to differential and integral calculus of several variables, functions of complex variables, ordinary and partial differential equations, infinite series and convergence, Fourier and orthogonal functions. Analysis of linear differential equations, non-homogeneous, boundary value problems, various methods of solving differential equations e.g. separation of variables, variation of parameters, Laplace transform, Inverse transforms, Power Series solutions and Fourier series. Methods studied will be shown how they can be applied to problem in business, finance and economics.

International Cinema
This course examines global cinema while considering the extent to which cultural, political, and historical contexts have influenced the form and grammar of film during the last century. The overall focus of the course is broad, ranging across more than eight decades and many different countries; it aims to study a variety of approaches to and theories of narrative cinema. During the semester, many international film "movements" are covered, which can include the French New Wave, the Chinese Sixth Generation, and Italian Neo-Realism. In addition, the representations of non-Western cultures from an “insider” and a “Hollywood” perspective are compared.

Managerial Accounting
This course introduces students to the generation of cost data for the preparation of proper, representative financial statements, and for optimal planning and control of routine operations and long range organizational goals. It focuses on the uses of formal cost accounting systems and quantitative techniques to make managerial decisions. Topics include: direct absorption income statements, job and process costing, allocation and proration, pro-forma and capital budgeting. This course provides a conceptual and applied foundation for future professional study and qualifications.

Endangered Species
This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of the science of ecology through a study of ecosystems, conservation, biodiversity, and selected endangered or threatened species. The course will address natural and anthropogenic causes of species’ decline and extinction and possible conservation techniques that are, could be, or could have been, used to reverse the extinction or decline. As well as some typical ‘poster species’, other less well known but equally important species will be discussed.

Development and Geopolitics in East Asia
Follows the developmental trajectory of East and South-East Asian states in the post-colonial era. The course will address both the international context and the internal social, political and economic dynamics of these states. Particular emphasis is placed on different theoretical and empirical explanations for both the phase of rapid economic growth and development (the ‘miracle’) and the 1997/1998 Asian Economic Crisis (the ‘meltdown’). The international relations of the region are addressed through a study of ASEAN, and of the political economic significance of the ‘hot’ Cold War in East and South East Asia.

The Politics of International Law
This course examines the concept, scope and nature of Public International Law and its significance in the context of the international political system. It examines both the legal approach to international politics and the IR approach to public international law. The course explores key issues in international law such as: the nature of international laws, the significance of state practice, the sources and jurisdiction of law, the role of law in limiting the use of force, governing environmental politics and trade. Questions of statehood are examined and case studies discussed to shed light on the controversies that characterize legal debates such as evaluation of the war in Iraq, the independence of Kosovo and South Sudan, the attitudes of the US towards international law, the role of International Tribunals and the United Nations.

Global Energy Politics
Examines some of the contemporary geo-political, economic, technical, governance and environmental issue surrounding global energy issues. We look at supply and demand tensions, transit and pipeline issues, infrastructure problems, private companies and state monopolies, deregulation and markets, innovation policy, energy and development, international cooperation, environmental stress, and energy futures.

Career Focused Workshops

Readying Your Resume, Cover Letters, and LinkedIn
Preparing your professional documents and online presence is an essential piece of your career search. This session will cover best practices for connecting the dots from your experiences on-campus and abroad to the job description as well as address common hurdles in composing cover letters. Participants will be invited to schedule a 1:1 review of their resume and LinkedIn profile with Angela Manginelli, AIFS Vice President, Director of Alumni & Inclusion Initiatives following the group session. 

How to Ace the Interview
Interviews can be stressful, so it’s important to be prepared to put your best self forward in the process. This session will review what employers are looking for in new hires, interviewing etiquette, tips for structuring responses to common interview questions, and provide information on how to craft your personal elevator pitch. Attendees will have an opportunity to practice mock interviews with their peers during the session and will receive resources to continue preparing following the session. 

Navigating the Transition from College Student to Career Professional
Unlike college, your career does not come with a syllabi and that transition can be challenging. This session will help students know how to successfully make the switch to post-graduate professional, including tips on working in a multicultural and multigenerational workforce. We will address how to consider multiple job offers, budgeting for life after college, and knowing how to advocate for yourself throughout your career.

Career Guidance for Working in Education Abroad
Interested in working in education abroad but don’t know how to get started? Join our panel of AIFS alumni and staff who will share their expertise on what it’s like to work in the field and tips for leveraging your cross-cultural experiences into a career. This session will include information on working in various roles at a university and an international education organization as an Admissions Officer, Field Staff member, Vice President, Director of Alumni & Inclusion Initiatives and many more. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask panelists questions and set up 1:1 informational interviews following the group session.

Spanish Cook-Off!!
You may think Spanish food is the same all over the country, but you would be wrong. AIFS has programs in six different locations in Spain - Salamanca, Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, Seville and Valencia – and each region has its own cuisine that they are rightly proud of.  Sit in with our wonderful Resident Directors as they discuss the merits of their regional dishes, it may get quite animated, and then tune in for some actual cooking demonstrations. Learn how to make an authentic tortilla from Gaye Michaels in Salamanca and pan con tomate from Inma in Barcelona, as well as more insights into life in each location. 

Italian Wine Tradition
Wine is a big tradition Italians have always been proud of. Meet Marco, AIFS Rome staff, to get introduced to the world of Italian wines. Classes are meant to introduce inexpert users to a correct and functional approach to the very complex culture of wine consumption. By tasting a different wine variety in each single class, topics such as wine tasting and food pairing methods, wines and grapes geography, table manners and drinking etiquette, and wine seen as cultural trait d’union between cuisine and local Italian traditions will be covered.

From registering fellow students to vote to learning about how you can support local, national and international policies that matter to you, Advocacy 101 is the place to get a basic understanding of the legislative process and how best to move forward and be heard in the digital age. This non-partisan session will explore opportunities to take action for international education and global engagement, and you’ll learn how to work with and educate your elected officials and their offices.

London: History and Diversity
Home to over 9 million people, with over 300 different languages spoken per day, London is one of the most diverse cultural capitals of the world, renowned for its creative industries including fashion (London Fashion week alone generates over £100m of orders), art, theatre and media. It boasts of over 200 museums and galleries, including the world-renowned British Museum (home to the Rosetta stone) and the Tate Modern Art Gallery, along with the main residence of Her Majesty the Queen, Buckingham Palace, and picturesque parks such as Hyde Park, St James’s Park and Richmond Park. Yet, despite all this, tradition is not the driving force behind London’s creativity – rather it is the diversity of its people that fuels and shapes London’s formidable cultural landscape. London professor Nicole D’Adamo Moody will introduce you to London’s rich cultural past and present.
