Assisi and Umbria Region (Day trip)

Travel to the Umbria region, the “green heart of Italy”, by private coach. Arrive in Assisi, situated on the hillside of Monte Subasio, overlooking the Umbria valley. Assisi is a beautifully preserved example of medieval architecture as well as the birthplace of St. Francis, patron saint of Italy.

Visit the Basilica of St. Francis, a masterpiece of medieval architecture decorated with beautiful frescoes by artists such as Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti.

Free time for lunch and continue on to visit the small charming towns of the area known for its olive farms. Learn about the production of olive oil and take part in an extra virgin olive oil tasting at a traditional mill. Return to Rome in the evening.

Optional Excursion to Florence (3 days - $545)

Discover the cradle of the Renaissance and its outstanding monuments. Take a guided walking tour of the city center to see the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and Palazzo Vecchio. Visit the world-famous Accademia Gallery to admire Michelangelo’s David as well as Palazzo Pitti, Santa Croce and other places of interest. Appreciate the culinary tradition tasting typical Tuscan food with a glass of Chianti wine. Stay in a centrally-located hotel with breakfast included. Enjoy some free time to explore the beauty of Florence on your own before returning to Rome.

Includes accommodations, breakfast, one food and wine tasting, travel, entrance fees and sightseeing with a Richmond art history professor as indicated.
