History/Social Science 304 (3 credits) | Contemporary India

This is a two-week intensive academic program that deals with the diversities and complexities of Contemporary India and its emerging role in the twenty-first century. It is designed to provide an overview of socio-cultural, political-economic realms and developmental issues through a multi-disciplinary prism. The course content will be delivered through a series of lectures by faculty of the university who are experts in their field and will engage you with new questions, perspectives and ideas. Readings will be provided to the students to accompany the lectures. Students are expected to keep up with the readings, and participate in classroom discussions and debates. The course deals with issues such as caste, religion, socio-cultural stratification, and is designed to bring a historical context to contemporary issues and realities. Topics include subjects and perspectives on philosophy, popular culture, media, development, literature, art, law, environmental policies, among others with themes including India and international relations, gender and society in contemporary India and Indian philosophy. The course includes lectures, interactive sessions, field trips, audio/video presentations, films and documentaries. There will also be cultural activities and field trips as part of the planned itinerary.
