Study Abroad in Budapest: Cultural Excursions

Included in your program fee are a range of activities which will take you outside Budapest and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of Hungary.

Szentendre (day trip)

Szentendre (St. Andrew) is a famous artist colony on the banks of the River Danube, only 12 miles away from the city center. Sometimes called, the “Montemarte on the Danube”, it has been a center for artists and craftsmen since the early 20th century, and is now populated with small local designs and craft shops, small art museums and galleries and great restaurants and pastry shops. With more than 200 artists resident in the town, there are countless workshops to visit to see them at work. With its multicolored houses, narrow winding streets, river front bars, Serbian Orthodox and Catholic churches and Baroque city center, Szentendre is a picturesque and enjoyable day trip from Budapest.

Vienna, Austria (3 days)

The capital of historic Austro-Hungarian Empire and modern capital of Austria, Vienna was the center of political power, scientific, commercial artistic and cultural life of the Habsburg and Austro-Hungarian dominion for the past 600 years. Despite the historic changes in the 20th century, the cultural and artistic legacy remain. Vienna is populated with cultural gems, world class museums and is bursting with historical and artistic treasures while hosting a dynamic international student population. Internationally established orchestras perform in lavish concert halls, food markets carry delicacies from all over the world, green parks line all over the city which turn into oases from the city hustle and bustle.

Friday departure by train, arriving in Vienna by early evening, group dinner and overnight in Vienna.

Saturday morning walking tour of the center of Vienna visiting sights such as the Stephenplatz where Mozart was married, the Vienna Art History Museum, the Hundertwasserhaus, designed by the contemporary Austrian designer Hundertwasser followed by a free evening.

Sunday morning visit to the Schönbrunn castle and afternoon departure by train back to Budapest.

Lake Balaton and Wine Country Tour (2 days)

Often compared to Italy’s Tuscany, with its volcanic and wine clad hills, unspoiled national parks, charming villages and its picturesque Tihany peninsula, Lake Balaton region is only 1.5 hours from Budapest. The trip will give you a taste of one of Europe’s biggest lakes, its nature as well as its award winning wines in authentic wine cellars. You will learn about the culture and history of wine making as well as the region’s folk traditions and local delicacies such as organically produced herbs, cheeses, paprika, fish soup and traditional lavender honey.

Optional Excursion to London, England (2 nights)

Included only for semester students on the AIFS Flight Package

Begin your semester with a 2-night visit to London en-route to Budapest. This will allow you to relax, recover from jet lag and get to know your fellow classmates while touring England’s capital.

Take a sightseeing tour with a professional guide who will point out some of London’s most famous landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London. Have time to explore the city on your own where you can take in the gorgeous parks and gardens, see a play in the West End or shop for vintage clothes at Camden Market.

Includes accommodations, breakfast, sightseeing tour and local guide.

Optional Excursion to Prague, Czech Republic (3 days - $375)

Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and a great contrast to the other two historical capitals of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Budapest and Vienna.

The Prague excursion will include a guided tour of the large Hradcany castle complex, the cathedral, the 14th century Charles Bridge, and the architectural artistry of Malá Strana. Enjoy free time to stroll down the Golden Lane, once a favourite of alchemists, or explore the Prague Jewish Ghetto, which includes the Kafka house and the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe.

Fee includes accommodation, breakfast, transportation, sightseeing and entrances as indicated.
