University of the Arts London (UAL)

University of the Arts London (UAL) comprises six renowned arts, design, fashion and media Colleges in London, all dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries: Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Arts. It has a world-class reputation and is ranked number 1 in the world for Fashion and number 2 for Art and Design. It is Europe’s largest specialist art and design university, with over 19,000 students from more than 130 countries.

With over 200,000 alumni all over the world, UAL is a global creative community like no other. The university has been the launchpad for the careers of many creative and cultural leaders, who have gone on to work in and help shape the arts, design, fashion, communication, media and performance worldwide such as designers Jimmy Choo, John Galliano, Sir Terence Conran and artists Lucien Freud, Sir Henry Moore and Sir Anish Kapoor, as well as actors Tom Hardy and Ralph Fiennes.

The specialized teaching staff at UAL is made up of professional artists, designers, critics and theorists, and by studying at Central Saint Martins or London College of Fashion, under their guidance, students will be following in the footsteps of many of the pioneers of Art, Fashion and Design.

Academic Overview and Policies

The study abroad summer school at University of the Arts London consists of two, 3-week sessions. You can take one session or combine consecutive sessions. Take one course per session. Each course is 60 hours and carries 4 semester credits. The majority of these are classroom hours.

An 8-week program at the London College of Fashion Is also available for 12 semester credits. Choose from one of three fields: Footwear Design, Introduction to Fashion Design and Introduction to Fashion Business in the 8-week program. The 8-week London College of Fashion programs include a field trip to Paris.

Courses are offered from several of the six colleges that make up the University of the Arts London. These include:

  • Camberwell College of Arts (CCA)
  • Central Saint Martins (CSM)
  • Chelsea College of Arts (Chelsea)
  • London College of Communication (LCC)
  • London College of Fashion (LCF)
  • Wimbledon College of Arts (WCA)

Please check with the AIFS Program Manager for course prerequisites. Students wishing to take courses at UAL should typically have one year of experience in the course subject matter unless applying for an introductory course. Some courses require a portfolio as part of the application. This may be in the form of images, videos or written work depending on the subject area. Students should consult with their university advisors in the U.S. prior to participating in the program to have course credit pre-approved.

Attendance is required to receive full credit. Unexcused absences are not permitted.

Courses run providing there is sufficient enrollment (a minimum of 10 students is required).

Grades No AIFS student is permitted to take a course without receiving a grade. Pass/fail options are not available.

A Record of Study and Achievement will be issued by the University of the Arts London. This will be sent to your home institution on completion of the program.
