Phyllis Slocum
Principal Lecturer, Department of Media Arts
Phyllis Slocum’s career in both professional and academic media spans more than 50 years. She joined the University of North Texas in 2002. She teaches upper level and graduate studies in media with an emphasis in television, broadcast, information, and management. She serves as Station Manager for ntTV (North Texas Television) the nationally acclaimed student-programmed and -operated cable and streaming channel; internship coordinator for the Department of Media Arts; and is the faculty academic advisor for Converged Broadcast Media. She also teaches the department’s long-running Study Abroad summer courses in British Broadcasting based in London. As a study abroad alumna both in high school and college, she recognizes the value this experience is for students. In addition to teaching, she serves on numerous academic boards and committees; is active in developing curriculum and student-career focused programs; and mentors incoming broadcast faculty and adjunct professors.
Prior to beginning an academic career, she worked in news radio then moved into television news. For more than 15 years at several TV stations, she worked as an anchor, reporter, producer, executive producer, and news director, recognized by her colleagues for outstanding work. Slocum moved into the area of broadcast consulting, joining one of the nation’s most highly acclaimed broadcast consulting firms: Audience Research & Development. For nearly 16 years she worked with television and media professionals with a focus on news, marketing, management, audience, and talent development. Privately, she is a professional voice-over talent working and presentation coach.
Slocum holds a B.A. in Political Science/International Studies from Kalamazoo College and an M.A. in Radio, Television and Film from UNT. She is active in numerous academic and professional organizations including the World Journalism Education Congress and the Broadcast Education Association serving on panels, making presentations, and has published and co-authored numerous professional and academic papers. She is currently the President of the Lone Star Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (EMMY Television Awards) and was honored with induction into the Gold Circle recognizing her more than 5 decades of media service.
