AIFS Photo/Video Contest: Terms & Conditions

  • Please review these official rules before entering the AIFS Photo/Video Contest.
  • No purchase or payment is necessary to enter or win this contest. A payment or purchase will not improve your chances of winning.
  • This contest is void where prohibited by law. Residents of the state of Arizona are not eligible to participate in this contest. Subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • All disputes will be resolved solely by binding arbitration and Entrants waive the ability to bring claims in a class action format.
  • The AIFS Photo/Video Contest (in the following, “the Contest”) is sponsored by the American Institute For Foreign Study (“AIFS”), 1 High Ridge Park, Stamford, CT 06905. This Contest gives AIFS participants an opportunity to highlight a photo or video created during their time studying abroad with AIFS.
  • Each Entrant in the Contest (“Entrant”) will select an original photo or video (“Entry,” “Photo Entry” and/or “Video Entry”) that was created while studying abroad with AIFS.
    • Three (3) Photo Entry finalists will be selected by the Editor, Catherine Rogliano, (the “Editor”), as determined using the criteria described below. The Photo Entries will then be posted to the AIFS Abroad Instagram account to be voted on by the general public. The Photo Entry posted on the AIFS Abroad Instagram account that receives the most ‘likes’ will be named the Grand Prize Photo Winner. The other two finalist Photo Entries posted on the AIFS Abroad Instagram account will also be named Winners.
    • One (1) Grand Prize Video Winner will be selected by the Editor, as determined using the criteria described below.
  • The one (1) Grand Prize Photo Winner will receive a prize of an amazon gift card valuing $250.00. The other two (2) Photo Entry finalists will also be named Winners and will receive a prize of an amazon gift card valuing $100.
  • The one (1) Grand Prize Video Winner will receive a prize of an amazon gift card valuing $250.



Entry rules

  1. General Information and Conditions
    1. The Contest is open to American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) Abroad participants as indicated on each contest’s main page, other than employees of AIFS.
    2. In order to enter the Contest, Entrants must send their photo or video to photos@aifs.com, using “AIFS Photo Contest” in the subject line, and complete an associated Submission Form (the “Submission Form”) providing information about the Entrant and Entry, including the Entrant’s full name, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address, study abroad program date and location, home school and state, a brief description of the Entry, and the Entry’s social media handle.
    3. Each Entry must be sent between April 11, 2022 and April 25, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, (the “Submission Period”).
    4. By entering the Contest, Entrants acknowledge their compliance with these Official Rules, including all eligibility and copyright requirements, as well as all rules listed concerning the use of Entries by AIFS.
    5. By participating in this Contest, Entrants agree to abide by these Official Rules as established by AIFS. AIFS reserves the right to review and qualify all Entries and to reject any Entries that do not meet the requirements for participation, as established by AIFS and these Official Rules. Decisions of AIFS and the Editor are final and binding in all respects.

  2. Eligibility Criteria
    1. The Contest is open to American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) Abroad participants, past and present, as indicated on each contest’s main page, other than employees of AIFS. Entrants must be at least 18 years old as of the start of the Submission Period, on April 11, 2022. All Entrants must be individual persons and not corporations or other business entities. Employees, officers, directors, agents, and representatives of AIFS and the Editor, together with any of their immediate family members and those living in their households, are not eligible to enter the Contest. Odds of winning depend upon the number of Entries received and are further described below.
    2. In order to be eligible, Entrants must upload their Entries before the end of the Submission Period. More than one Entry per Entrant is permitted. Besides a short description of the Entry, the Submission Form must include the Entrant’s full name, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address, study abroad program date and location, home school and state, a brief description of the Entry, and the Entry’s social media handle. Each individual Entry must be accompanied by a Submission Form, even if an Entrant submits more than one Entry. Entries that are submitted without a Submission Form or with an incomplete Submission Form will not be judged and will not be eligible to win a prize. Also, Entries that are uploaded before or after the Submission Period will not be judged and will not be eligible to win a prize.
    3. Both the Entry and the accompanying Submission Form must comply with these Official Rules.
    4. AIFS reserves the right, at its discretion, to disqualify or discount any Entry, photo, video, or vote connected to votes cast by unfair means.

  3. Submission Criteria
    1. An eligible Entry will consist of both an Entry, and an associated Submission Form, containing information about both the Entrant and the submitted Entry.
    2. All Entries must be submitted free of copyrighted music, audio, or other content. AIFS reserves the right to remove, or change said content from any Entry.
    3. There is no limit to the number of Entries one Entrant can submit but only one prize will be awarded per Entrant regardless of how many Entries are submitted.
    4. Each photo or video constituting an Entry can only be entered once. Duplicates will be removed.
    5. The photo or video Entry must have been created while studying abroad with AIFS and must be the Entrant’s original photo or video. Entrants must be the sole author and owner of the copyright of all photos and videos entered into the Contest.
    6. Source material or proof of permission to use must be made available on request by AIFS.
    7. Computer-generated or computer-altered images and videos will not be accepted. Artwork and illustrations will not be accepted.
    8. Entries will not be accepted unless submitted via the official contest channel. Entries not submitted through the proper channel will not be considered.
    9. AIFS takes no responsibility for corrupted or late entries.

  4. Voting and Judging
    1. Each Entry must be sent between April 11, 2022 and April 25, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, (the “Submission Period”). The three (3) finalist Photo Entries will be based on the Editor’s selection, using the criteria described below, and will be posted on the AIFS Abroad Instagram on May 2, 2022. Beginning on May 2, 2022, any member of the public may visit the AIFS Abroad Instagram account to view the three (3) finalist Photo Entries and may vote, via like, for his or her favorite finalist Photo Entry. The eligible finalist Entries will remain open for voting (via the general public liking the photos on the AIFS Abroad Instagram account) through 11:59 Eastern Daylight Time p.m. on May 4, 2022, when voting will close. The period from May 2, 2022 to May 4, 2022 is the voting period (the “Voting Period”).
    2. For Photo Entries, three (3) photos will be chosen as finalists based on the Editor’s choice. Photo Entries will be judged using the following criteria, each of which will be given roughly equal weight in the sole discretion of the Editor:
      • Composition
        • For example, the Editor will consider photos that showcase a steady hand, do not contain computerized effects, are at least 6 MP and/or 1050x1500 pixels and/or 300 dpi, etc.
      • Subject Matter
        • For example, the Editor will consider photos that showcase academic experiences featuring students, small groups of AIFS friends and acquaintances, diverse students, candid experiences, beautiful locations, etc. The finalist Photo Entries will then be posted to the AIFS Abroad Instagram account to be voted on by the general public. The posted Photo Entry that receives the most ‘likes’ from the general public will be named the Grand Prize Winner. The other two finalist Photo Entries will also be named Winners.
    3. For Video Entries, one (1) video will be named the Grand Prize Winner per the Editor’s choice. Video Entries will be judged using the following criteria, each of which will be given roughly equal weight in the sole discretion of the Editor:
      • Composition
        • For example, the Editor will consider videos that showcase a steady hand, do not contain computerized effects, are at least 720 dpi, etc.
      • Subject Matter
        • For example, the Editor will consider videos that showcase academic experiences featuring students, small groups of AIFS friends and acquaintances, diverse students, candid experiences, beautiful locations, etc.
    4. Photo Entry finalists will be contacted directly, via the email address provided on the Submission Form, on April 29, 2022. Grand Prize Winners will be contacted directly, via the email address provided on the Submission Form, on May 4, 2022. AIFS is not responsible for unsuccessful efforts to notify any finalists, Winners, or Grand Prize Winners.
    5. In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of an Entrant who submitted a winning Entry, the Entry will be deemed to have been submitted by the individual listed in the Submission Form. In the event a dispute regarding the identity of the individual who actually submitted an Entry cannot be resolved to AIFS’s satisfaction, the affected Entry will be deemed ineligible.

  5. Prizes
    1. Three (3) prizes for Photo Entries will be awarded. The prizes are as follows:
      • One (1) Grand Prize, in the amount of an amazon gift card valuing $250.00.
      • Two (2) finalist Prizes, in the amount of an amazon gift card valuing $100.00.
    2. One (1) prize for the winning Video Entry will be awarded. The prize is as follows:
      • One (1) Grand Prize, in the amount of an amazon gift card valuing $250.00.
    3. Limit of one (1) prize per person/household for the entire Contest. Odds of Winning: The odds of winning each prize depends upon the total number of Contest Entries received by the end of the Submission Period. The odds of winning each prize also depends upon the quality of the Entry, as judged by the Editor and/or by the voting public.
    4. Payment will only be awarded for winning Entries.
    5. All Winners are solely responsible for any and all local, state, and/or federal taxes on the prizes, as well as any other costs and expenses not specified herein.
    6. Except for the prizes awarded, as specified above, no other compensation in any manner will be paid or given to any Entrant of the Contest.
    7. Winners cannot assign or transfer a prize to another person. AIFS reserves the right to substitute any prize, or variations of any part of a prize of approximately equivalent value in its sole discretion. AIFS makes no warranties or disclaimers concerning the prizes beyond those customarily given.
    8. AIFS’s decision on all matters relating to the competition is final. No correspondence will be entered into.
    9. AIFS reserves the right to withhold prizes if, in the opinion of the Editor, the quality of Entries falls below the standard required.

  6. Use of Submitted Entries by AIFS
    1. By submitting an Entry, each Entrant grants, approves, and authorizes AIFS the irrevocable right to use, broadcast, webcast, podcast, link to or from, or otherwise exhibit, distribute, or display the submitted Entry in its original or shortened form in connection with any purpose, whether commercial, non-commercial, educational, or otherwise. Submitted images and videos may be used at any time for other AIFS Abroad marketing materials, including, but not limited, to catalogs, brochures, flyers, posters, website, emails, and social media.
    2. Winners consent to the use of their image, video, name and/or photograph in any publicity carried out by AIFS, without further compensation. In particular, at any time, AIFS may, for any purpose, whether commercial, non-commercial, educational, or otherwise: (a) upload, copy, reproduce, display, or distribute the submitted Entry, (b) transmit the Entry by telecommunication, and/or (c) make the Entry accessible and available on AIFS’s website, AIFS’s YouTube Channel, AIFS’s social media accounts, or by any other means. AIFS may act in any or all of these ways without further notice or compensation to the Entrant.
    3. By submitting a Contest Entry, Entrants grant AIFS the non-exclusive right to reproduce it for any purpose at any time in any media with or without attribution. In connection with promoting or marketing the Contest and/or any subsequent contest of a similar nature, AIFS may cut, translate, or reformat any submitted Entry and use, broadcast, webcast, podcast, link to or from, or otherwise exhibit, distribute, or display the resulting modified Entry. In particular, AIFS may use an original Entry or parts of the same for creating snapshots, trailers, promotion clips, or similar media without further notice or compensation to the Entrant.
    4. Each Entrant grants AIFS the unqualified, unrestricted, worldwide, irrevocable, perpetual, and royalty-free right to use his or her name, image, logo, Entry, and other distinctive identification in connection with promoting or marketing the Contest and/or any subsequent contest of a similar nature, without further notice or compensation to the Entrant.
    5. AIFS is under no obligation to use the Entries as provided herein. In particular, AIFS has no obligation to post or display any submitted Entry.
    6. Entries will not be returned and will become the property of AIFS. AIFS reserves the right to edit or change the submitted Entry at any point.

  7. USE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION
    1. By providing his or her email address to AIFS, Entrants agree to receive periodic updates from AIFS relating to any of AIFS’s products, services, or both. In addition, by visiting AIFS’s website or social media, or both, Entrants consent to AIFS’s Privacy Policy.
    2. Except as outlined above, personal information submitted to AIFS in connection with the Contest will only be used to contact Entrants in order to (i) notify the finalists and winners, (ii) resolve questions or problems regarding the submitted Entries or their content, and (iii) communicate general news or issues pertaining to the Contest, or any of these.
    3. AIFS will not disclose, give, sell, or transfer any personal information about the Entrants, unless required for law enforcement purposes or by statute.
    4. As any Entry may be made public at AIFS’s sole option, Entrants should not include personal information (such as addresses, phone numbers, etc.) about themselves or anyone else in their Entries.

  8. DISCLAIMERS AND EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY
    1. Each Entrant is solely responsible for obtaining from all applicable individuals, entities, or third parties any and all required rights, releases, consents, clearances, licenses, and any other authorization necessary to exploit and otherwise use their submitted Entry in any and all media.
    2. By entering, each Entrant releases and holds harmless AIFS or any other entities involved in the administration of the Contest, each of their respective parents, subsidiaries and affiliates, and each of their respective directors, officers, employees, and agents, (collectively, the “Sponsor Parties”), from any and all responsibility, damages (including without limitation direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, punitive, and statutory damages), penalties, costs, liabilities, and losses of any kind arising out of or relating to: (i) participation in the Contest; (ii) any violation by the Entrant of these Official Rules or any laws; (iii) any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, right of publicity, or other intellectual property misappropriation or infringement attributable to Entrant or his or her Entry; and (iv) the receipt or use of any prize awarded in connection with this Contest. Without limiting the foregoing, the Sponsor Parties are not responsible for any injury or damage to Entrants or any other person’s computer related to, or resulting from participation in, or downloading any material in connection with, the Contest. If anyone makes any claim against any of the Sponsor Parties arising out of or relating to any actions or inactions attributable to an Entrant, such Entrant will pay for any damages, penalties, costs, liabilities, and losses, including without limitation attorneys’ and experts’ fees and costs, incurred by any of the Sponsor Parties in connection with such claim. AIFS is not liable for any typographical or other error made in the printing of these Official Rules.
    3. Each Entrant is solely responsible for the correct submission of his or her Entry and AIFS assumes no responsibility for lost, misdirected, illegible, or unintelligible Entries.
    4. AIFS assumes no responsibility for any circumstances that may limit an individual’s ability to participate in the Contest or otherwise affect the administration, security, impartiality, or normal course of the Contest, including but not limited to technical problems with AIFS’s website, any email, telephone, network, or other transmission system, any computer virus or bug, or any human error which may occur in the administration of the Contest or the judging process.
    5. AIFS will not be liable for any injury, loss, or damage of any kind caused by or resulting from a participation or attempted participation in the Contest, compliance or non-compliance with these Official Rules, or an Entrant’s acceptance, use, or misuse of any prize awarded to the Entrant.
    6. AIFS reserves the right to cancel, modify, or suspend the Contest without notice for any reason at its sole discretion. In that case, AIFS also reserves the right in its sole discretion to award all prizes from the eligible Entries received before the cancellation.
    7. AIFS may extend the Submission Period, the Voting Period, or both at its sole discretion. Any extension of the Submission Period will be announced on the AIFS’s social media.
    8. EACH ENTRANT AGREES THAT: (1) ANY AND ALL DISPUTES, CLAIMS, AND CAUSES OF ACTION ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THIS CONTEST, OR ANY PRIZES AWARDED, SHALL BE RESOLVED INDIVIDUALLY, WITHOUT RESORTING TO ANY FORM OF CLASS ACTION, PURSUANT TO ARBITRATION CONDUCTED UNDER THE COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION RULES OF THE AMERICAN ARBITRATION ASSOCIATION THEN IN EFFECT, TO TAKE PLACE IN CONNECTICUT; (2) ANY AND ALL CLAIMS, JUDGMENTS AND AWARDS SHALL BE LIMITED TO ACTUAL OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS INCURRED, INCLUDING COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH ENTERING THIS CONTEST, BUT IN NO EVENT ATTORNEYS’ FEES; AND (3) UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL ANY PARTICIPANT BE PERMITTED TO OBTAIN AWARDS FOR, AND PARTICIPANT HEREBY WAIVES ALL RIGHTS TO CLAIM, PUNITIVE, INCIDENTAL, AND CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, AND ANY OTHER DAMAGES, OTHER THAN FOR ACTUAL OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES, AND ANY AND ALL RIGHTS TO HAVE DAMAGES MULTIPLIED OR OTHERWISE INCREASED. ALL ISSUES AND QUESTIONS CONCERNING THE CONSTRUCTION, VALIDITY, INTERPRETATION AND ENFORCEABILITY OF THESE OFFICIAL RULES, OR THE RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS OF PARTICIPANT AND AIFS IN CONNECTION WITH THE CONTEST, SHALL BE GOVERNED BY, AND CONSTRUED IN ACCORDANCE WITH, THE LAWS OF THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT, WITHOUT GIVING EFFECT TO ANY CHOICE OF LAW OR CONFLICT OF LAW, RULES OR PROVISIONS (WHETHER OF THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT OR ANY OTHER JURISDICTION) THAT WOULD CAUSE THE APPLICATION OF THE LAWS OF ANY JURISDICTION OTHER THAN THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT.
