Study Abroad in Salamanca: Housing & Meals
AIFS students in Salamanca live in Spanish homes carefully selected by the Resident Director or in a University student residence.
Homestay
The homestay experience can be the most rewarding part of a student’s time abroad. Patience, respect and an open mind are essential to its success. It is the best way to learn to speak Spanish, get involved in the culture and integrate into the local community. Students have three meals a day with their host. Most rooms are based on double occupancy. If a student wants a single and one is available, the student pays a supplement of $90 per month directly to the host.
Student Residence
Students may choose to live in a student residence for a supplementary fee. The University co-ed residence is 5 minutes from the University. All of the rooms are singles with private baths and telephones. Students take three meals a day, seven days a week, at the residence cafeteria. The residence has two TV rooms (with video and DVD), a reading room (providing daily local newspapers), a chapel, an auditorium, a study room and a modest gym. For an extra fee internet and/or laundry services can be contracted. There are a limited number of places available in the Spanish residency and, as it’s more expensive than the homestay, students choosing this option must pay a supplement before departing the U.S. For the Fall semester this is $750 and for the Spring semester it is $950.
Own Living
If a student chooses to rent an apartment locally, he or she must notify AIFS before the program begins to receive the housing rebate. AIFS does not have direct involvement in any student's own living arrangement.
Please note: Once the program begins, students cannot switch their housing selection (to/from homestay, student residence or own living). However, if there are incompatibilities in a homestay that cannot be worked out, the student will be switched to a different homestay. Full year students will have the option of changing their housing selection for their second semester.
