Overview

Spend a summer in the sparkling city of Salamanca, Spain with AIFS! Study a variety of academic program options at the University of Salamanca. Known as the “Golden City” due to the golden glow its sandstone buildings give in the sun, the entire city of Salamanca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ambience during the summer is especially lively, with a large international student population enjoying the open-air events organized by the university.

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

The University of Salamanca was founded in 1218, making it one of the oldest public universities in the world. Today, the university is an important center for the study of humanities.

This program is for students wishing to combine intensive Spanish language classes with study of the Spanish culture. Spanish is available at all levels from beginner to superior. Course level is determined by an online placement test given before arrival in Salamanca. 

Session 1 (3 weeks) 

Classes are 3 hours per day from Monday through Friday for a total of 45 contact hours and 3 credits. 

Elementary level students have 2 hours of Spanish language + 1 hour of vocabulary building per day. 

Intermediate, Advanced and Superior level students have 3 hours of class per day including 2 hours of Spanish language. For their third hour they can choose from a list of topics. See courses page for courses available. 

Additional Courses: for an additional fee students can take a further 1 or 2 hours of class per day for an additional 1 or 2 credits. Beginner level students continue to focus on improving their grammar and communicative abilities. 

Intermediate and above level students choose from a range of elective classes which may include Spanish Culture, Spanish and Latin American Literature, the Arab world in Hispanic Culture, Oral Skills Practice, Spanish Art, Spanish and Latin American Cinema, Written Skills Practice, Spanish Conversation and Composition, History of Spain. Session 2 (4 weeks) 

Classes are 3 hours per day from Monday through Friday for a total of 60 contact hours and 4 credits. 

Elementary level students have 2 hours of Spanish language + 1 hour of vocabulary building. 

Intermediate, Advanced and Superior level students have 3 hours of class per day including 2 hours of Spanish language. For their third hour they can choose from a list of topics. See courses page for specific courses available. 

Additional Courses: For an additional fee students can take a further 1 or 2 hours of class per day for an additional 1 or 2 credits. Beginner level students continue to focus on improving their grammar and communicative abilities. 

Intermediate and above level students choose from a range of elective classes which may include Spanish Art, Contemporary Spanish Literature, Oral Skills Practice and Written Skills Practice, Spanish Culture, Contemporary Spanish History, Business Spanish, Spanish Conversation and Composition. Session 1 + 2 combined (7 weeks of classes + 1 week free time) 

Classes are 3 hours per day from Monday through Friday for a total of 105 contact hours and 7 credits.

Additional Courses: For an additional fee students can take a further 1 or 2 hours of class per day for an additional 2 or 4 credits. Beginner level students continue to focus on improving their grammar and communicative abilities taking classes in Communicative Activities and Language Lab.

Homestay

Living with a Spanish family is often the highlight of the study abroad experience. It provides the opportunity for full immersion in the local culture and language and is the best way to improve your Spanish skills.

Geography

Salamanca is an ancient university town situated in the west of Spain in the Autonomous Community of Castilla and León. 

History

It is a UNESCO World Heritage City and is home to The University of Salamanca., which dates back to 1218, and is the oldest university in Spain, and third oldest university in Europe.  

Cuisine

Salamanca is known for it’s local cuisine and is considered one of Spain’s best cities for a “tapeo” or a feast of small bites and drinks.

¡Hola! I have coordinated study abroad programs at the University of Salamanca since 1987 and have been working as AIFS Program Director since 1993. I received my BA from SUNY Cortland in 1983 and spent my junior and senior years of undergraduate study at the University of Salamanca.

As Program Director, I am your counselor, administrator and friend. I provide guidance and support during this program full of excitement, adventure and education. You will find me in the AIFS office, in the heart of Salamanca, next to the Plaza Mayor and a 5-minute walk from the university.

The Program Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of Spanish culture, a wide range of cultural activities and excursions are included in your program fee. Typical activities may include:

  • Welcome dinner
  • Spanish cooking class
  • Professionally guided tour of Salamanca – to help you get to know more about where you will be living
  • “Tapas” tour
  • Horseback riding (extra fee)
  • Open air jazz concerts
  • Chocolate con churros in the Plaza Mayor
  • Visit to the Jeronimus Cathedral tower for a bird’s eye view of the city
  • Spanish dance lesson
  • Swimming pool day
  • Visit to the Casa Lis Art Nouveau, Art Deco Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Modern Art
  • Evening music concerts in the Plaza Mayor
  • Fireworks by the river (in June)
  • Farewell lunch

Please note that students may pay a small additional fee for some of the activities above.

Excursions

This program offers a range of day trips and excursions that will take you outside Salamanca and deepen your social, historical and cultural understanding of Spain. Previous excursions have included:

Mogarraz, La Alberca and Riomalo (Session 2 only)

Guided sightseeing tours and entrance fees. Swimming in Riomalo’s natural pools. Includes round-trip transportation.

Optional Flight Package

Students can select an optional transportation package for all AIFS programs. Students who choose to book their own flights should meet up with group at the program location and will need to make their own ground transportation arrangements.
