Study Abroad in Granada: Academics

AIFS Office

Students use the AIFS Office and Student Center daily for consultations with staff, tutoring, meeting and studying with friends as well as accessing the Internet. AIFS office amenities include: a Student Center with 4 computers and a wireless broadband hook-up (for those who bring their own laptops), webcams, fax and photocopier machine, an “intercambio” board for meeting Spanish students, a library of travel books, texts and novels in English and Spanish, mailbox, and cultural and travel information. Course load Placement in all academic programs will be determined by a language test at orientation. Please refer to each course and to the table below for prerequisites:

Students must choose 5 courses. Since the University requires students take a minimum of 4, one may be dropped during the first week. Please note there are required courses for each level, these courses may not be dropped. Course loads by level are as follows:

Class time

Fall semester classes meet for 10 weeks, plus one exam week. Each class meets twice a week, for a total of 4 hours. Spring semester classes meet for 14 weeks, plus one exam week. Each class meets twice a week, for a total of 3 hours. (The University of Granada increases hours per week in fall semester to end the semester before Christmas and still enable students to obtain the same credit hours as spring semester).

Grades

No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a letter grade. Pass/Fail grade options are not available.

Honors program

Students in Advanced Hispanic Studies may attend a maximum of 2 University of Granada courses with Spanish students, but they must take a minimum of 3 courses in the Advanced Hispanic Studies program. In regular University of Granada courses, classes are usually lectures with little or no student participation.

Student advising

AIFS maintains an office with full-time staff in Granada and has a close relationship with officials of the University. The AIFS Resident Director and staff can help students find a suitable academic program.
