Study Abroad in Barcelona: Academics
No previous Spanish language study is required for the Pre- Established Program.
All students take a Spanish language course plus up to 3 electives for a maximum of 15 credits. Placement in Spanish language will be determined by a language test at orientation. Students are advised to complete their application early and select their courses as soon as possible as classes are filled on a first-come-first-served basis. There is no guarantee students will be allocated their preferred courses.
Semester classes meet for 15 weeks. Spanish classes consist of 90 hours of lectures. Electives meet for 45 contact hours.
No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a letter grade. Pass/Fail grade options are not available.
Regular Studies Program
Students at advanced-level Spanish or bilingual students may integrate in the Regular Studies program and attend courses with Spanish students at the Bellaterra Campus. The courses will be in the official languages of the university (Spanish and Catalan) plus some options offered in foreign languages. The academic calendar is different from the Pre-Established Program. In regular Universitat AutÚnoma de Barcelona courses, classes are usually lectures with little or no student participation. Please note that students taking the Regular Studies Program will be required to stay for the duration of the exam period at the end of each semester and will therefore stay longer in Barcelona.
AIFS maintains an office with full-time staff in Barcelona and has a close relationship with officials of the University. The AIFS Resident Director can help students find a suitable academic program.
UAB awards ECTS credits. The number of class hours will be shown on the transcript to allow each studentís home institution the ultimate decision in the awarding of U.S. credit. Recommended semester credits are in parenthesis in the course listings.
Transcripts are issued by the University Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
