Hestea received her BA degree in Psychology in 1994 and a postgraduate diploma in Education in 1996 at Stellenbosch University. She is continuing postgraduate studies in psychology towards her Ph.D. Before becoming the Resident Director in February 2003, Hestea worked in the International Office at the University for more than a year handling student accommodations.

In recent years, Hestea has been general manager and owner of a book store, a high school English teacher, active in sports and community development for four years and a tour guide for Americans visiting South Africa. She has also worked in a school and home for disabled and disadvantaged children and adults. She was captain of the under-21 South African hockey team, a resident leader for first year students at Stellenbosch University, and the head girl of her high school in Wellington, South Africa.

The Resident Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.
