January 2011 Thoughts
The first month was probably the hardest... Getting off that bus and stepping into my new city was so terrifying. The uncertainty about what to do and say to my Senora when I first met her and living with my new friend and companera de cuarto, Casey. Now at first, I was feeling how I felt back in middle school, when you are one of the last kids to be picked up after school. Because Marissa, mi Senora, was a little late. But I knew immediately that I would never forget her or her graceful, mother- like demeanor.
After unpacking all of our belongings, it finally started settling in that this room was going to be our home for the next five months. I was missing my family and Alejandro real bad... So I had a moment and thought about my decision to come and my real reason for coming all the way to Spain. I want to open doors and avenues for my sisters to follow through, letting them know that if I can make this trip happen, then you can to.
The whole month of January was consume by a four hour intensive Spanish class everyday. And the weekends seem to be your only escape from school and you could really explore Granada. All the unknown discoveries and getting to know your surroundings, such as your neighborhood, outside attractions, clubs, and bars. Babel, POE, Eshavira, Kapital, Granada Diez, Hannigans & Sons, Paddys, teterias, and Babylon, just to name a few.
Ten Things I LOVE About Study Abroad: ( IN Granada, Spain)
1. When you refer to back home as "the States."
2. Good food can be found anywhere, especially in small family owned restaurants or your Senora's kitchen.
3. People speak English just as fast as Spanish.
4. How Spanish dialect is different in every Spanish speaking country.
5. Whenever you enter a building, someone always says 'Hola'
6. Being greeted at home with "Hola guapa"
7. Their concept of time and necessity for a siesta
8. Los "ligones" speak any language and can be found in all cultures
9. Walking to school every morning with a view of the mountain, appearing at arm's length.
10. How you can make a home away from home, even if its only for five months.
Make the best of your time abroad, because once you return to the States it will all feel like a dream.
