Study Abroad in Rome: Living Abroad

Visas – Very Important!

Students must apply for a visa with the Italian consulate. Upon acceptance, AIFS will provide instructions and the necessary official documents about the academic program and the semester in Italy; however, students must contact the Italian consulate directly for the appropriate visa forms.

Richmond Study Center

Richmond Study Center is located in Piazza Sant’Andrea della Valle, in the very heart of Rome, a few steps from the Piazza Navona, Campo de’ Fiori and the Pantheon. Across the street is the church of Sant’ Andrea della Valle, a must-see for opera lovers, as in this church the action of the first act of Puccini’s Tosca takes place. The Center is located in one of the richest areas of Rome’s historic center. Within walking distance are sublime monuments, beautiful piazzas, bustling markets and lively cosmopolitan neighborhoods. The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Trastevere may also be reached on foot in a few minutes.

Volunteer Work Program

This program enables students to get to know many aspects of the society and community they are living in and to receive practical, hands-on training and work experience in one of a range of volunteer work associations. Whether students help teaching English in a local school or mail flyers for a local association, they will experience the real world through hands-on work and use this experience to explore major or career interests. Volunteering in Rome offers a unique opportunity to meet and communicate with Italians, to practice the language and to see another side of local culture.

Internships

Students have the opportunity to work part time as volunteers in local companies or small business. See course INB 483 or SSC 483 on page 170 for a full course description.
