Study Abroad in Prague: Travel

From Prague, students can easily reach the nature and culture of southern and western Bohemia, its mountains and forests, cities and medieval towns. Travel throughout the Republic by bus or train is easy and inexpensive. From Prague, students can visit the café culture of Vienna, Berlin’s night-life, Munich’s modern art museums or Budapest’s old-world charms.

3-day London stopover and overnight in Munich (Included in fee)

Every semester begins with a 3-day visit to London and an overnight visit to Munich, en route to Prague. Students have the opportunity to visit London and Munich, recover from jet lag and meet and travel with fellow AIFS students to campus.

Wednesday, September 3 or January 28 Morning arrival in London where the flight will be met by an AIFS representative. Transfer by bus to a centrally located hotel. Balance of the day free.

Thursday, September 4 or January 29 Morning sightseeing tour with a professional guide who will point out some of London’s most famous landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London. Afternoon and evening free.

Friday, September 5 or January 30 Transfer to the airport in London for flight to Munich, the capital city of Bavaria. Sightseeing in Munich including the Glockenspiel and Nymphenburg Palace. Overnight in Munich.

Saturday, September 6 or January 31 Afternoon transfer to Prague by bus.

Includes hotel, breakfasts, airport transfers, sightseeing tour and local guide. Lunch and dinner are not included.

3-day visit to Moravia, Czech Republic (Included in fee)

Moravia is the eastern region of the Czech Republic famous for its wine and beautiful scenery.

Friday, September 12 or February 6 Travel by bus to Brno, the main city of Moravia, stopping in Zdar nad Sazavou to visit the gothic-baroque church dedicated to St. John of Nepomuk, built by the architect Jan Santini Aichl—a UNESCO World Heritage site. Overnight in Brno.

Saturday, September 13 or February 7 Visit to the deep caves of the Moravian Karst, a beautiful wooded hilly area north of Brno. Underground boat trip. Off to Krtiny to visit the Church of the Virgin Mary, also known as the “Pearl of Moravia.” Overnight in Brno.

Sunday, September 14 or February 8 Travel to Slavkov (Austerlitz), where Napoleon was victorious over the Austrians and Russians in 1805. Return to Prague early evening.

3-day visit to Kraków, Poland (Included in fee)

Kraków is one of the great Central European cities: a city of culture, a city of kings and a city of learning. Its beautiful main square is one of the largest in medieval Europe. Its castle at Wawel Hill has existed for more than 1,000 years and is considered by many Poles to be the home of the nation.

Friday, November 7/14 or March 13/April 17 Early morning departure by bus for Kraków, Poland. Sightseeing includes a stroll through Kraków’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to Market Square, one of the largest in all Europe. See the intricate Gothic altar masterpiece in St. Mary’s Church. Overnight in Kraków.

Saturday, November 8/15 or March 14/April 18 Students visit Wawel Castle and the Jewish Quarter, Kazimierz, setting for the movie, Schindler’s List. Students visit the remains of the WWII Jewish Ghetto in the Podgórze district. Overnight in Kraków.

Sunday, November 9/16 or March 15/April 19 Morning visit to the Martyrdom Museum in Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous Nazi Concentration Camp of WWII, preserved as a memorial to the 1.5 million people of 28 nationalities who perished there. Afternoon departure for Prague by bus.

Visits to both Moravia and Krakow include accommodations, breakfast, travel, entrance fees and sightseeing. Lunch and dinner not included. Dates and itineraries are tentative and subject to change.

Optional 3-day visit to Vienna, Austria ($245)

The grandiose city of Vienna (Wien), with a population of nearly 1.7 million, was the showpiece of the Habsburg Dynasty, which controlled much of Europe for more than 600 years. Despite the ravages of time, its cultural gems remain: monumental edifices line the city center, world class museums burst with historical and artistic treasures and internationally established orchestras perform in lavish concert halls.

Friday, November 21 or April 3 Early afternoon departure by bus for Vienna, stopping en route in the Moravian town of Telc, a UNESCO heritage site surrounded by lakes, with a beautiful 15th century Gothic castle. Free evening. Overnight in Vienna.

Saturday, November 22 or April 4 Morning visit to Stephansplatz, where Mozart was married and where his funeral was held. Visit to Belvedere Palace constructed for Prince Eugene of Savoy between 1714-1722. The tour ends with a visit to Hundertwasserhaus, designed by the contemporary Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Free evening. Night in Vienna.

Sunday, November 23 or April 5 Morning walking tour of the center of Vienna. Afternoon visit to Schönnbrun Palace. Afternoon departure by bus for Prague.

The fee includes accommodations, breakfast, travel, entrance fees and sightseeing. Lunch and dinner not included. If a minimum enrollment of 10 is not met, the tour may be cancelled. Itinerary and dates are tentative and subject to change.
