Study Abroad in Prague: Travel
From Prague, students can easily reach the nature and culture of southern and western Bohemia, its mountains and forests, cities and medieval towns. Travel throughout the Republic by bus or train is easy and inexpensive. From Prague students can visit the café culture of Vienna, Berlin’s night-life, Munich’s modern art museums or Budapest’s old-world charms.
3-day visit to London and overnight in Munich (Included in fee)
Every semester begins with a 3-day visit to London and an overnight visit to Munich, en route to Prague. Students have the opportunity to visit London and Munich, recover from jet lag and meet and travel with fellow AIFS students to campus. Includes hotel, breakfasts, airport transfers, sightseeing tour and local guide. Lunch and dinner are not included.
Wednesday, August 29 or January 23 Morning arrival in London, where the flight will be met by an AIFS representative. Transfer by bus to a centrally located hotel. Balance of the day free.
Thursday, August 30 or January 24 Morning sightseeing tour with a professional guide who will point out some of London’s most famous landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London. Afternoon and evening free.
Friday, August 31 or January 25 Transfer to London airport for flight to Munich, the capital city of Bavaria. Sightseeing in Munich including the Glockenspiel and Nymphenburg Palace. Overnight in Munich.
Saturday, September 1 or January 26 Afternoon transfer to Prague by bus.
3-day visit to Moravia, Czech Republic (Included in fee)
Moravia is the eastern region of the Czech Republic famous for its wine and beautiful scenery.
Friday, September 14 or February 8 Travel by bus to Brno, the main city of Moravia, stopping in Zelena Hora (Green Mountain) to visit the Church of the Virgin Mary, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Evening with Moravian folk band playing traditional Czech and Moravian songs. Overnight in Brno.
Saturday, September 15 or February 9 Visit to the deep caves of the Moravian Karst, a beautiful wooded hilly area north of Brno, on an underground boat. Wine-tasting in a local vineyard. Overnight in Brno.
Sunday, September 16 or February 10 Travel to Slavkov (Austerlitz), where Napoleon was victorious over the Austrians and Russians in 1805. Visit the “Pearl of Moravia,” a beautiful Rococo church, and the picturesque university town of Olomouc. Return to Prague early evening.
Optional 3-day visit to Vienna, Austria ($245)
The grandiose city of Vienna (Wien), with a population of nearly 1.7 million, was the showpiece of the Habsburg Dynasty, which controlled much of Europe for more than 600 years. Despite the ravages of time, its cultural gems remain: monumental edifices line the city center, world class museums burst with historical and artistic treasures and internationally established orchestras perform in lavish concert halls.
Friday, October 5, November 23, February 22, or March 14 Early afternoon departure by bus for Vienna, stopping en route in the Moravian town of Telc, a UNESCO heritage site surrounded by lakes, with a beautiful 15th century Gothic castle. Free evening. Overnight in Vienna.
Saturday, October 6, November 24, February 23, or March 15 Morning visit to Stephansplatz, where Mozart was married and where his funeral was held. Visit to Belvedere Palace constructed for Prince Eugene of Savoy between 1714-1722. The tour ends with a visit to Hundertwasserhaus, designed by the contemporary Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Free evening. Night in Vienna.
Sunday, October 7, November 25, February 24, or March 16 Morning walking tour of the center of Vienna. Afternoon visit to Schönnbrun Palace. Afternoon departure by bus for Prague.
3-day visit to Kraków, Poland (Included in fee)
Kraków is one of the great Central European cities: a city of culture, a city of kings and a city of learning. Its beautiful main square is one of the largest in medieval Europe. Its castle at Wawel Hill has existed for more than 1,000 years and is considered by many Poles to be the home of the nation.
Friday, October 19, November 2, March 14, or April 18 Early morning departure by bus for Kraków, Poland. Sightseeing includes a stroll through Kraków's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to Market Square, one of the largest in all Europe. See the intricate Gothic altar masterpiece in St. Mary's Church. Overnight in Kraków.
Saturday, October 20, November 3, March 15, or April 19 Students visit Wawel Castle and the Jewish Quarter, Kazimierz, setting for the movie Schindler's List. Students visit the remains of the WWII Jewish Ghetto in the Podgórze district. Overnight in Kraków.
Sunday, October 21, November 4, March 16, or April 20 Morning visit to the Martyrdom Museum in Auschwitz-Birkenau, the infamous Nazi Concentration Camp of WWII, preserved as a memorial to the 1.5 million people of 28 nationalities who perished there. Afternoon departure for Prague by bus.
The fee for all three visits includes accommodations, breakfast, travel, entrance fees and sightseeing. All other expenses are your own responsibility. Lunch and dinner not included. Dates and itineraries are tentative and subject to change. Fall students may choose between two weekends some excursions.
