AIFS Weekend Trip to Moravia

Moravia is the name of the land that was joined with Bohemia (historical
name of the Czech lands) in the 11th century. Moravia was a center of the first Slavic empire, which was established in the 9th century and destroyed by Hungarian tribes roughly 80 years later. Moravia is linked with the first Christian mission to this part of Europe and the spreading of the Christian faith, especially to Eastern Europe. Leaders of this mission were two apostles, St. Constantin and St. Methodius – the patron saints of Europe.

Czech Delis and Sweets Shops

By now you've probably had more than your fair share of dumplings and fried cheese. But have you had chlebiícky or some of the various salads like potato salad that Czechs like to grab for a quick snack? Before McDonald’s, pizza-by-the-slice shops and gyro stands became prominent places to buy food on the go, there was the Czech version of fast food. Traditional fast food shops called Lahudky (delicatessen) and sweets and cake shops called Cukrarna (sweet shops) used to be located on almost every corner of the downtown area. They are still around, but if you don’t look for them you may miss them. Here are a few worth visiting:

Public Transport Passes

In couple of weeks your transport passes will be expiring. AIFS will buy you another pass valid for one month, but we cannot buy them for you, as you’ll need to present your transit pass ID.

What to do? Go to a ticket window at the metro station and tell them you want a pass, a 30-day student rate “sliding” pass – studentská klouzavá 30 denní. It should be valid from December 4. The date of expiry of your current one is written on your pass. It will cost 260Kc. In order to get reimbursed, you MUST have a paragon, or official receipt.

Here’s the foolproof plan:

  1. Write down studentská klouzavá 30 denní and show this along with your current pass at the sales window.
  2. Pay 260Kc and ask for a paragon (write this down, too!)
  3. Write your name on the back of the paragon and bring it in to me for reimbursement.

AIFS Cultural Activities
