Study Abroad in Salzburg: Academics

The semester begins with a 2-week orientation including a 2-credit German language preparation course. Although students are required to take German during orientation, German language is optional for the rest of the semester. Whether you begin with some knowledge of German or none at all, this program is designed to enable you to participate in all levels of University life.

Students continue their studies, selecting from a variety of classes depending on ability and preference:

German Language Courses
Students can continue German language learned at orientation throughout the semester. Ideal for students majoring in German, or looking to take all of their language credits in one semester.

Courses Taught in English or Basic German
Choose from a wide array of courses by the University of Salzburg, developed and taught especially for AIFS students

University of Salzburg Courses in German
AIFS students can enroll in any course offered by the University of Salzburg where enrollment is not limited. AIFS students must have at least 2 years of college-level German to take regular University courses. Due to the University of Salzburg academic calendar, students taking these courses must stay and pay for an additional month in Salzburg. See course descriptions for details.

AIFS Study Center AIFS has its own office in the heart of the city where students can meet or use the library.

Attendance is required for full credit. Students exceeding limits of unexcused absences receive an “incomplete.”

Computer facilities Students at the University have e-mail access at no charge. Various University departments offer limited student computer facilities. Local providers charge approximately 4 euros an hour. Limited use of computer facilities is available at the AIFS office.

Course load Classes meet for 12 weeks each semester (plus 2 weeks of language orientation). Courses are worth 3 credits and total 45 contact hours per semester. One course hour equals 45 minutes. Classes are held Monday to Friday.

Grades are based on tests taken at the end of the semester. The grading system uses numbers that roughly correspond to American letter grades: 1=outstanding achievement, 2=achievement above the required, 3=satisfactory, 4=work barely meets course requirements, 5=fail.

No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a letter grade. Pass/Fail grade options are not available.

Libraries In addition to the extensive University libraries, AIFS has its own selection of books related to the AIFS courses available for student reference (a deposit of 30 euros is required to check out books).

Textbooks Students can expect to spend around 170 euros per semester for textbooks and course supplies.

Transcripts are issued by the University of Salzburg approximately eight weeks after the semester ends. A letter explaining the Austrian system for the home institution is included with each transcript.

Student advising The Resident Director provides academic advice and serves as a liaison between students and the University.
