Study Abroad in Salzburg: Travel

From Salzburg, you can easily reach the mountains, meadows and lakes of the Austrian Alps, take a weekend trip to the cafés of Vienna and the “hundred spires” of Prague, see the Blue Danube, drift through the old world charms of Budapest or cross the Alps into the medieval villages and gentle hills of Northern Italy.

3-day London stopover (Included in fee)

Every semester begins with a 3-day stopover in London en route to Salzburg. Students have the opportunity to visit London, recover from jet lag and meet and travel with fellow AIFS students to campus.

Friday, September 12 or February 6 Morning arrival in London where the flight will be met by an AIFS representative. Transfer by bus to a centrally located hotel. Balance of the day free for rest and relaxation.

Saturday, September 13 or February 7 Morning sightseeing tour with a professional guide to some of London’s most famous landmarks including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London. Afternoon and evening free.

Sunday, September 14 or February 8 Transfer to airport for flight to Munich. Transfer to Salzburg

Fee includes hotel, breakfasts, airport transfers, sightseeing tour and local guide. Lunch and dinner are not included.

Day trip to Munich, Germany (Included in fee)

This popular destination for university students retains its Bavarian Gemütlichkeit. Includes travel by bus, sightseeing, local guide and entrances.

Saturday, October 4 or February 28 Travel to Munich by train. A local guide takes the group on a walking tour of the city center to see the most famous sights including the Nymphenburg Palace and the Glockenspiel. In the afternoon, students have free time to explore Munich on their own. The Resident Director reimburses students for museum entrances. Early evening transfer to Salzburg by bus.

Fee includes travel, sightseeing, local guides and entrances. Dates will be confirmed at the beginning of the program.

3-day visit to Vienna (Included in fee)

The traditional heart of the Habsburg Empire, Vienna is the dynamic capital of central Europe and center for international diplomacy, finance and culture.

Friday, October 17 or March 13 Travel by bus across Austria from Salzburg to Vienna to spend three days in a hotel in the city center. Afternoon walking tour of major sights of historic Vienna. Evening free. Overnight in Vienna.

Saturday, October 18 or March 14 Morning guided tour of the Art History Museum, which contains one of the world’s finest art collections. Afternoon and evening free to explore the city (visit coffee houses, museums, theater, musical events or other night life). Overnight in Vienna.

Sunday, October 19 or March 15 Morning visit to Schönbrunn Palace, residence of Habsburg emperors. Midday tour of Melk Abbey, an historic Austrian Benedictine abbey and one of the world’s most famous monastic sites which is located above the town of Melk overlooking the Danube river. Afternoon departure by bus to Salzburg, arriving by early evening.

Day trip to Innsbruck (Included in fee)

Innsbruck, the capital of Tirol, lies at the very heart of the Austrian Alps. Innsbruck is famous for its winter sports and has twice been home to the Winter Olympics.

Saturday, October 25 or April 25 Travel to Innsbruck by sightseeing bus. Students begin their day excursion with a walking tour of the picturesque 16th and 17th century Baroque buildings with the impressive Nordkette Mountains as a stunning backdrop. Sites include the 14th century Stadturm, the Goldenes Dachl (Golden Roof), the Triumph Gate and the “Hofburg”, the residence of the Hapsburgs in Innsbruck. Students have free time to explore Innsbruck on their own.

Fee includes travel, sightseeing, local guides and entrances. Dates will be confirmed at the beginning of the program.

3-day visit to Prague, Czech Republic (Included in fee)

Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, as well as one of the most popular tourist destinations.

Friday, November 14 or May 8 Travel by private bus from Salzburg to Prague. Overnight in Prague.

Saturday, November 15 or May 9 Wake up in Prague, the perfectly-preserved jewel of the Czech Republic. Take a guided tour of the huge Hradcany Castle complex, including the cathedral, the 14th century Charles Bridge and the architectural artistry of Malá Strana. Enjoy free time to stroll down Golden Lane, once a favorite of alchemists, or explore the Prague Ghetto, which includes Europe’s oldest cemetery. Overnight in Prague.

Sunday, November 16 or May 10 Morning free. Afternoon departure by bus to Salzburg.
