Study Abroad in Sydney & Fiji: Student Life
Orientation
A special session for study abroad students introduces them to their new life in Australia and includes information on housing, public transportation and travel, medical insurance, student life and activities in Sydney. Students are familiarized with facilities and services on campus.
Visa
Students must obtain a mandatory visa for entry into Australia. Apply directly to the Australian consulate. All students apply online at www.immi.gov.au.
Student life
Activities Students at Macquarie enjoy being in a cosmopolitan city near great natural resources. The Program Coordinator organizes cultural and social activities throughout the semester including a performance at the Opera House and weekend events.
Computers Students have daily access to the Computer Center on campus and in the Macquarie Library computer room, which has free Internet access. Students can also access the Internet from their dorm rooms (additional fees apply).
Insurance The Australian government requires foreign students
to pay for mandatory health coverage (Overseas Student Health Charge). Included in the AIFS fees, this is paid directly to the provider, OSHC Worldcare, by Macquarie.
Volunteering in the local community
The local community is not the only beneficiary of your volunteer work. Volunteering can mean increased self-esteem, feeling appreciated for doing a worthwhile job and bringing new meaning to your life. A volunteer experience can teach you about yourself, current issues, government services and the local community.
You can make a difference while you are in Sydney and help make this corner of the world a happier, healthier, safer place to live for those who need your help. You can work alone or with locals, at home or in the community, on your own schedule. You set the hours and choose the job that you want to do.
Full details of the volunteer program will be given during orientation.
