Study Abroad in Buenos Aires: Academics

This program is open to students in good standing (2.75 or better GPA). For the Spanish program, students must have studied one year of college level Spanish prior to entering.

For the English program, students must take Spanish during orientation and the semester, but all other courses are in English. Students begin with a 4-week intensive Spanish course for 5 credits. Courses are offered at Elementary, Intermediate I, II and Advanced levels.

For the Spanish program, students have a wide choice of courses taught in Spanish for international students for 4 credits (64 academic hours) each. In all, students take 13 or 17 credits—usually a Spanish language course (5 credits) plus two or three other courses (4 credits each)—plus the 5 credits from the 4-week intensive Spanish course making a total of 18 to 22 credits.

Grades

No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a letter grade. Pass/Fail grade options are not available.

Attendance

The University requires students to attend a minimum of 80 percent of their classes to receive a passing grade.

Student advising

The Resident Director provides academic advice and handles communication with the University.

Intensive Spanish Orientation (5 credits)

Courses are offered at Elementary, Intermediate I and II and Advanced levels. Courses have 60 class hours times 60 minutes, for a total of 3,600 minutes, equivalent to 5 academic credits.
